There is a difference of

What can you do to manage
your post-election letdown?
First, accept that It Is a normal
reaction to bitter
disappointment, especially if
you care deeply who wins the
race and believe that your own
life will be drasdcally altered
by the outcome. Expect to feel
irrita.don and anger, whJc:h. 1f
you are not careful, may be

to identify th1a anger aa belng
related to your

not something that ts caused

You may get amfous and
feel dread lf you believe that
your personal wodd is golng

because of who won. And you
may even experience a
depressive reaction lasting
daya, weeks or longer. where
you ruminate on the miserable
long-term consequences of
the next four years with the
"wrong" man.
You may be preoccupied for
the next few days or even
weeks with elecdon-related

scenarlos, disgust for the
system or fantasies about
wanting to escape to Canada
or the South Pacific. Let all or
these thoughta and fantasies
come and go, not feeling the

them. Remember that having
the thought does not make it
real.
Olallenge your
all-or-nothing thinking that
the next four years will
determine the future of the
country or deeply impact the
rest of the world. It's rarely
been true before -only when
great leaders collided with the
destiny or circumstance and
opportunity -and It won't be
true now. Recall that the three
branches of government were
created to ensure checks and
balances and that many
attenuating factors limit the

Daughter
keeping
Garlands
legacy alive
Tom Titus
Daily Pilot
T he last movie Judy Garland made
was called "I CouJd Go on Singing."
In a way. she's still doing just that,
thanks to her younger daughter, who's
keeping the legendary vocalist's legacy
alive some 35 year.. after her mother's
death.
Loma Luft, a Broadway and cabaret star
in her own right, has taken on the nussion
to preserve the Judy Garland story for
succeeding generations with her tounng
show entitled "Song~ My Mother Taught
Me."
She'll bring this very personal tribute to
Founders Hall of the Orange County
Performing Art.'> Center Nov. 16 for a
week-long engagement.
"I've been doing the show for five years
now, and it's been incredibly weU
received." Luft ~d in a telephone
intel'Vlew shortly after returning home to
Beverly 1 lills after performing for two
months in London's West End.
Ar the time, she was getting ready 10
take her act to Horida -MJ'm so glad it's
still there (after four consecutJve
hurricanes!." she said.
There are those who believe no one but
Judy should ever attempt to sing the
songs she made famous, such as UOver
the Rainbow," "You Made Me Love You"
or "The Man That Got Away." Until
recently, Lorna and her more celebrated
sibling. Liza MinneUj, were among them.
Mmnelli's Carnegie Hall album contains
none of her mother's signature numbers.
"Liza's begu11 just recently to sing
Mama's c;ongs." Luft said. "We're two
totally different people. It took me WdY
into my 40s (she'U turn 52 the day after
her show doses) to feel comfortable
enougJ1 to see that people never, ever
forget what she's done. She was too
important to the entertainment world for
us not to say thank you to.·
Actor Kevin Spacey. Luft said, put 11 m
perspective when, discussing who should
carry Garland's torch musically, he said,
"If not you, who cl\e?"
Who else. indeed. But Luft's initial
tnhute rudn't mvotve her vocal cords. Ju
19'J7, she wrote the book. MMe and My
Shadows." about growing up with a
legend. In 200 I, it was turned into a
four-hour television miniseries entitled
"Life With Judy Garland: Me and My
Shadows," starring Judy Davis and
executive produced by Luft.
What was Luft's involvement with that
project?
"Everything down to the color of the
costumes: she said. ·1 really wanted 11 to

Jack of the trumpeting trade

I fa guy refers to Henry
Mancini as "Hank.• he either
thinks he's being funny or
he's just plain cool. Jack
Sheldon played trumpet in the
original recording of Mancini's
"Pink Panther;" hi!> gruff but
velvety speaking voice sounds like
an old-school DJ who's just taken
a shot of whiskey; he used to
hang with Dizzy Gillespie; and he
does indeed calJ Mancini "Hank."
It's pretty safe to say he's cool.
Sheldon grew up on the East
Coast and was playing clubs by
the time he was 15. He won a
scholarship to study at a
prestigious music school in
Bloomfield, Mich .. in high school
and then ended up in the Air
Force, where he honed his chops
playing in the United States Air
Force Band.
A huge fan of Gillespie, he
wouJd hang around at venues the
trumpeter was scheduled to play
at hours before the show began
and ask him lo get him in. Pretty
brazen for a young trumpeter.
but GilJespie was a driving force
in Sheldon's passion to play'.
"I used to just try to hang

getting me into a lot of shows,"
Sheldon said. u Dizzy was just
ama7fog, the best trumpet player
I ever saw. He couJd make sounds
come out that just didn't seem
possible ... no one else couJd
make those sounds. I le created a
style that's been copied by
everyone.·
Sheldon would eventually grow
to become a peer of Gillespie's
and aJso play with the likes of
jazz greats Benny Goodman,
Dexter Gordon and Stan Kenton.
Playing alongside people he
idolized was obviously surreal,.
but he belonged in their
company.
"l just let my playing speak for
itself, and if you play good, they
love you ... and if you don't, they
hate you," he said.
His off-the-cuff monologues
between numbers, combined
with his jolly, fat-guy appearance
and virtuosic musical abilities,
landed him a spot as music
director/sidekick on "The Merv
Griffin Show" for two decades.
Being funny, talented and cool
made him a natural for the smalJ

voice over work on shows like
"The S1mpsons" and "The Family

In his younger days, Sheldon -
who hac; been named Playboy

songs and stories set agaimt a
backdrop of film and video clips
that work in concert with the

segment, Garland sang "Uz.a ..

Johnny Mercer, who came up
with the ownber "Loma" -
which Luft will include in her
show at the center.
Loma followed in her

Engine -
The 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT is
powered by an intercooled and
turbocharged 2.5·liter,
four-cylinder boxer engine that
produces 250 horsepower at
5.600 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of peak
torque at 3,600 rpm. The engine
shares architecture and
technology with the engines
used in other Subaru
turbocharged performance
models such as the WRX sn, but
most key components including
the cylinder block. turbocharger
and intercooler are unique to
Legacy 2.5 GT.
Active Valve Control System
CAVCS) variable valve timing
technology helps optimize low
'and mid-range torque and
high-end output. and the Legacy
2.5 GT engine is characterized
by a wide torque curve for
outstanding power at all speeds.
All Legacy engines for 2005 use

Performance-Bred Oluala
A new, stiffer unitized body
structure makes greater use of
aluminum and high-strength
steel, as well as advanced
construction technlques
including hydroforming and
tailored-blank welding,
Aluminum parts include the
hood and bumper beams and
the rear gate on wagons. Using
aluminum at the vehicles
ventilated rear discs (solid discs
on other models).
The rad-and-pinion steering
system in Legacy 2.5 GT has
been redesigned for quicker
response, greater precision and
improved feel. A new,
high-strength "cannon mount"
secures the steering rack to the
front subframe. A damper valve
helps prevent the kickback and
vibration that would otherwise
result from the added stiffness
provided by the cannon mount
