consider the general-plan
amendment at a study session
first Tentative approval there
could give the school district
confidence that the project will
go through.
The sticking point is that if the
council approves the general-
plan amendment, and the
school district board doesn't ap-
prove the agreement. then the
general-plan amendment can-
not be rescinded, Ridgeway said.
A 8Al.ANCE Of BENEFTTS
Once the amendment ls In
place, the church could contest
under the Religious Land Use
and Institutionalized Persons Act
that the general plan allows for
expansion and circwnvents the
city, Ridgeway added. The act
states that governing bodies
can't impose land-use regula-
tions that impose a stgnificant
burden on the religious exercise
of a person, a group or an or-
ganization unless there ls a com-
pelling government interest and
any limits are the "least restric-
tive means."
"It gives (the church) some
leverage, and I don't think we're
prepared to go there without the
larger benefit to the entire com-
The city's PubUc Works Depart-
ment reviewed the revised plans
and determined the antennas
would provide adequate light
along SUperior Avenue, according
to the staff report.

Alex had to be rushed to a
different hospital by ambulance
after her lungs started filling up
with liquid.
"They told me months later,
when I was better, that I was on
the verge of dying." Alex said. "f
was really shocked that it
happened to me."
It gave her a new appreciation
for life, Alex said.
"A lot of things I took for
granted before, I started looking
at diffenmtly," she said.

munity," Ridgeway said. "The re-
turn to the city is the community
benefit So we need to be more
careful on bow we deal with this. ..
The school district has been
cooperative in preparing pre-
liminary documents for the city
to review, Ridgeway said.
"We're just trying to get the
church on the right path, and I
think they are," Ridgeway said.
Por the school district's part. It
wants to make sure the agree-
ment benefits it as well as the
community, Reed said.
"There are certain issues that
pertain to the school district. and
it bas to be the achool district's
interest to be engaged In this,"
Reed said. "We can't be engaged
in the position where M! lose
anything to the process, but this
is not our problem that we're try·
ing to help them solve. If there's
something from which the
school di.strict can benefit. that
helps create a compelling argu-
ment for the school district.,.
A WEEX'S WORTH Of HELP
The increase in parking for
the school primarily will benefit
the neighborhood during the
week. said JC.en Williams, chair-
law governing installation of the

hard to see that and not being

But what Alex did in that one
year bore testimony to Alex's
determination to get back on
her feet and do what she loved
to do, her mother said. And it
helped that Tubiessen is a
professional physical therapist.

first few days," Tublessen said.
"Then f got her started on
Pilates equipment. and
gradually we were doing

the church congreganta won't
be using the parting lot at all

dents wW be using it -so it will
take 80 to 100 cars off the street,
Wllllams said.
This is not the first time the
school and church have tried to
bash out a solution. In Novem-
ber 2001, the church proposed
contributing 60% of the funda
for a parting structure that
would have provided between
525 and 800 parking spaces on
the school campus to be oper-
ated jointly. But neighbors op-
posed to the church's building
program didn't like that idea.
The school district termi-
nated the project, cancellns

concept drawings for the struc-
ture In April 2002. At the time,
opponents said they didn't have
enough information about the
church's renovation plans to
make informed opinions about
the parking structure.

M ost Saturday
mornings, I
wal.lc my dog,
Maggie, to the Farmer's
Market on the corner of
Marguerite and Coast
Highway. Actually, to be
accurate, she takes me.
I can't figure out how
she knows ir's market
day (how can the
aromas waft all those
blocks to my house?),
but on Saturdays, she
'---"'-----...... seem to understand
MAXINE
COHEN
that she was taking a
lot of time to have
wants met that were
inappropriate for the
bolts nght out the gate and off
we go, with her pulling on the
leash tO get there faster.
Now, this is a good Farmer's
Market Produce is fresh and
tastes great, but it is not a
bargain. An upscale market in
this town, which shall remam
nameless, is selling heirloom
tomatoes at 50 cents less per
pound So, I decided lo do a
taste test to see if this was really
wonh it I bought some com
and tomatoes at the Farmer's
Market and some at another
upscale market that shall remain
nameless. I enlisted the help of
my daughter. I closed my eyes
and she fed me, first one and
then the other. It was clear as a
bell. The Farmer's produce was
far and above more flavorful.
OK, rm sold!
My first stop is the Old Town
Baking Co. I like their sourdough
bread and nuts. My next stop is
the produce stand on the left,
where this old man, all by
himself, works like a fiend to
handJe all the customers. There
is usually a line.
lltls particular day, I had
picked out what I wanted and
was waiting in line to pay. A
pretty young woman two people
ahead of me wanted a yellow
watermelon, but the man had
only red ones wrnpped and
sitting out, ready to go. He
hurried mto his truck to get ont•.
I {e sliced it open. gave her a
little silver to LaSle and approve,
which she did, and he began to
wrap it up.
"Oh no," she said sweetJy,
"wouJd you cut the fruit off the
rind please?"
He took his knife and,",,.,
one long stroke, neatly
separated the two.
He began to wrap 11 up.
"Oh no:· she giggled, ·1 don't
want the rind. I just want the
fruit."
The line was quite long by
now, and I wao; feeling annoyed
and impatient. Let 11 go, Max, I
said to myself. So what if it's
taking forever. What's the big
rush anyway? But I couldn't let it
go.
~no you gift-wrap, too?" I
quipped, trying to contain my
irritation. She laughed.
The woman behind me
chimed right in; "Yeah, this isn't
Bristol Fanns."
Right on, sister1
The young woman laughed
again and shrugged. Oh well,
she seemed to say, this is what I
want and this is how I want it
I'll be done in a few minutes. Al'l
of you can wait.
She finally got her
watermelon just the way she
wanted it, paid fo r it, and was
about to leave when, oops, she
remembered she'd forgotten the
mushrooms. She took her time
looking among the
pre-packaged ones. I held my
setting, and that people were
waiting. She didn't apologize, try
to hurry or seem the least bit
concerned.
Now, I don't know this lady, so
I'm just guessing -an educated
guess for sure -but I'd say she
exhibits a particular personality
type called narcissistic.
Remember the Greek God
Narcissus, who fell in love with
his own image reflected in a
pool of water? Well, that's pretty
much it in a nutshell.
But to flesh it out, our
watermelon shopper appears to
have a strong sense of
entitlement. She deserves to
have what she wants in the way
she wants it, and others should
defer to her because she is so
important. She doesn't
understand al some basic level
that the wants and feelings of
others that don't match up with
hers are nonetheless real for
them, and so she lacks empathy
and may even exploit others
without knowing it. So, it's not a
man er of" me ~t. and then 1 'U
be able to tend to you." Oh no.
It's a matter of"me and me and
me some more!"
This yow1g lady is grandiose.
She expectS others to see her as
'>pedal and cater to her because
'>he doesn't understand that
others couJd see her differently
nan she sees ht•rself. or that
1here couJd ht· <lllY valld11y to
their view if thty do
And 1f they do, she is likely to
fall apart im1de. Her sense of
self-esteem 1s fragile and
maintained by her excessive
need for admiration. Unless she
is constantly attended lo and
reflected by others in the way
she sees herself, she is unable to
maintain the image of herself
that sustains her.
We all know people like this.
You just have to hope that you're
not in an important relationship
with one of them. It wouJd be
way too hard, because if you
hang in and try to impress on
her that your wants and feelings
are real and she needs to attend
to them, she will most likely feel
injured. How dare you treat her
so badly! She will defend herself
with rage and keep at you.
hammering her viewpoint
home, until you acquiesce
because you just can't stand it
anymore.
Not a pleasant prospect.
So, I tell ya. I sure do like that
Farmer's Market, but I think I'll
take the watennelon with the
red meat, thank you, and I'll' cut
it off the rind myself when I get
home.
