Council to honor three
with Mayor's Award
Diane and PauJ HiU and Gor-
don Wesl are the latest recipi-
ents of the Co'lta Mesa Mayor's
Award, which recognizes Indi-
viduals in the community who
have performed an outstanding
service, act or good deed.
They were nominated for
their outstanding volunleer
contribu1ions in developing the
first Costa Mesa Citizens Corps
Volunteer Managemenl Team
and enlisting residents in
neighborhood disaster-prepar-
edness courses. They will be
recognized by Mayor Gary
Monahan on Nov. 15 al the City
Council meeting. The award
presentation will stan at 6:30
p.m. in the council chambers at
Costa Mesa City Hall.
West is one of the founding
members of Mesa Emergency
Services Amateur Communica-
tions, which provides commu-
nicatJon support through the
amateur radio system to the
city in times of emergencies, di-
sasters, emergency training and
pubUc-service events.

CPR and Community Emer-
gency Response Team training
throughout the city and have
set up neighborhood meetings

there's a better way of doing

Guzman each tallied two assists in the
host Pirates' 6-0 triumph against Fuller-
ton to conclude Orange Empire Confer-
ence play.

first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division II-AA playoffs Tuesday night

matched Spartan team that finished its

A coin flip today at 9 am. will deter·

ond-round match against Victor Valley at
7 p.m. Thursday. Victor Valley defeated
Hemet. 25-12, 21 -25, 25-10, 30·28. to ad-
vance to the second round
In a match that featured a three-point
perfonnance from San Gorgonio of San
Bernardino in the second game. the Sail·
ors will inevitably race stronger teams in
playoff rounds to come. Victor Valley
( 14·2) will most likely be one of those
teams.
"You see all sorts of teams in the play-
offs," Sailor Coach Dan Glenn said before
Tuesday's match. MSome teams are very
unorthodox. but !San Gorgoniol isn~ go-
ing to be real. real good."
Genns prediction turned out to be ac-
curate. as Newport was over and done
with the match in less than an hour. de-
spite Glenn rotating three freshmen
throughout the match. and removing

"The biggest advantage
we had was that it was a home game,"

productive playing time. Her serving in

The Sailors were coming off a hair-
splitting match at Corona de! Mar Friday
night. where the Sailors lost= games to the Pacific Coast League ions.
