"We were undefeated th.is

hlgh-flved one of his friends.
There's nothing unusual
about their friendship. ln their
spare time, they like to play
poker.
"You could add 'and drinlc' to
everything we like to do,"
Shanley said with a smile.
But what makes them a
one-of-a-kind group is the way
they've stuck together over the
years, he said .
•How many people can say
they've known someone for 20
years?" Shanley said. "Nol
many. Not even our parems "
The friends played football
together al Costa Mesa High
School. Their moment of glory
came when they made the
quarterfinaJ of the CIF
championships in their senior
year.
It was also a tough time,
because two of the seven found
out their mothers had breast
cancer, Dan Baume said.
But the rest of the group
supported them through it.
Both moms were survivors.
"We've seen each other
through a lot of stuff," Sean
Bawne said. Thinking back. the
group didn't intentionally get
together or maJce a pact 1ha1
they would stick together,
Jeremy Siedsma said.
"We didn't choose to be
friends," he said.
"No we didn't," Dan Baume
agreed. "We just all fell in a
bucket."
Sports can strengthen a bond
like nothing else can, Shanley
said.
"I can't th.inlc of a time when
we didn't play sports," he said.
"We're all jocks, pretty much.
But hey, it's a good way to stay
out of trouble, right?"
There is an unspoken
language between the friends
that helps when they play team
sports, Dan Baume said.
"We know each other's
tendencies," he sa.id. "We see it
in each other's eyes or body
language."
"Sometimes tt almost feels
llke u's ESP." S1edsma said with
a laugh.
Hones ty has always formed
the basis of their brotherhood,
Felter said.
"We're very open with one
another," he said. "It's hard to
lie to these guys. They all know
where I live."
Costa Mesa is also a common
denominator. None has plans to
leave the city.
"Why would we leave th.is
place?" Shanley said. "It's the
most wonderful city. The great
weather with the beach and the
mountains just a heartbeat
away. I plan on having a family
here. raising my kids here."
Dave Siedsma, Jeremy's
father, said it'~ been

Jail time for teen should
not precede conviction
I am a civil attorney who bas
practiced in Orange County for
more than 30 years. Everybody.
except a jury. has decided that
Greg Ha.idl, the son of former
Orange County Assistant Shenff
Don Haidl, is guilty of several
crimes. He has been on bail. Bail
is nothing but an amount of
money. or a bond, that is posted
by the accused (note: not guilty
but just accused) to guarantee
tus appearance in coun.
The prosecution seems to
believe that If they think
someone is a ·bad guy." he _
should be in jail waiting for
them to convict tum. Well they
have not convicted him of
anytlung to date. The news
stones sound like u was a ·c1ose
call" at the last trial. The jury
was overwhelmingly not for
conviction.

Jail time fo r teen should
not precede conviction
1 am a civil attorney who has
practiced in Orange County for
more than 30 years. Everybody,
except a jury, has decided that
Greg Haidl, the son of former
Orange County Assistant Sheriff
Don Haidl, is guilty of several
crimes. He has been on bail. Bail
is nothing but an amount of
money, or a bond, that is posted
by the accused (note: not guilty
but just accused} to guarantee
his appearance in court.
The prosecution seems to
believe that If they think
someone is a "bad guy.· he
should be in jail waiting for
them to convict him. Well. they
have not convicted him of
anything to date. The news
stories sound like it was a "close
call" at the last triaJ. The jury
was overwhelmingly not for
conviction.

Think about 1t, folks. They still
have to try you and find you
guilty before you should be sent
to jail. Let's make the
prosecution convict Haidl of
something before sending him
to jail. Hasn't that aJways been
the American way?

If you do venture to a local

clocked in to help on a holiday
to make your day bener.
Thanksgiving traditionally
marks the start of the holiday

Newport Beach Golf Course is
also open on Ouistmas and
New Year's.
Leonard said Christmas is
significantly slower than
Thanksgiving. New Year's,
though, brings more golfers,
some undoubtedly giddy to try
that new driver.
I foliday rates are the same as
weekend fees at Newport -$25

So if the golftng bug hits

should be a course ready for
