Local dealers aren't feeling car-tax crunch
One Newport dealer got a boost from people trying to

But In most of the cruses ln Costa Mesa

weeks too late, Archer said.
"When there is a date·rape drug In

needs to be reported right away.·
Detectives also miss out on forensic evi·

"That's why a lot of these cases don't go

Alcohol was also involved in several In-

partying had too much to drink and left
with a male acquaintance." Archer said.
Women need to take precautions while

THE BUSINESS OF LANGUAGE
Nice form in that

0 h, happy day!
Today I'm

"with." "up," etc. th.at

wake of alleg~dons that the

engaging In questionable
trading practices that
shortchanged small lnvestors.
The letter begins, ·Dear Ms.
Casagrande" -not "Dear
Investor," as so many
less-caring companies might
have begun. This tells me that l,
June Casagrande, am Important
to them. My stake in their
multibillion·dollar fund might
be just a puny one (puny, puny,
puny), but clearly, they
understand and care that it's
still a lot of money to me. Before
even reading the Brs•sentence, I
know J'm in good hands.
The first two paragraphs are
hinlng examples of a
something I've written about
h~: Use the word "you• to

·vou likely have many
questions regarding reports of
recent regulatory Inquiries into
mutual fund trading practices,
the announcement of recent
changes at Strong, and your
own investments in the Strong
Funds,• the first paragraph
begins.
The second paragraph gets
even better. "Your concerns are
Important to us.•
Who wouldn'1 love to hear
that?
AB I read on, I was delighted
lo see that the writer skillfully
sidestepped almost all of the
pitfalls to which most business
writers fall prey:
·Mr. Strong does not believe
t.ha1 his transactions were
disruptive to any or the funds in
which he invested."
Notice the writer's adept
avoidance of the temptation to
end the sentence in a
preposition. Many might have
written, ·runc1s be Invested In.·
The wonderful people at Strong
rose above.
Ending sentences with
prepositions is one of those
·ru1es" that even the expens
agree isn't hard-and-fast. "The
t.radJtional caveat of yesteryear
against ending sentences with
prepositions ls, for most writers,
an unnecessary and pedantic
restriction," the Chicago
Manual of Style notes. ·A
sentence that ends In a
preposition may sound more
natural than a sentence
carefully constructed to avoid a
final preposition.•
, make fer an awkward
sentence. A priceless example is
attributed to Winston Churchill:
·nuu is the type of am.nt
pedantry up with which I shall
not put." ·
So, by au means. don't feel
you're using bad English if you
say, "Where are you from?"
instead of "From where are
your On the contrary, the first
one Is definitely better.
Yet those fabulous folb at
Strong know exactly when to
observe the rule -a clear
indication of their unwavering
reverence for rules in general
The letter writer aJso dazzled
me with an expert use of
punctuation in a bulleted list
In listing the highlights of a
thorough self-review the
company plans to conduct. the
writer skillfully observed some
arcane rules.
According to Ollcago Style,
for bulleted or numbered lists,
you should:
• end all but the last bulleted
Item with a semicolon;
• place the optional word
"and" after the semicolon; and
• finish with a period.
Other style boob disagree. by
the way, saying to end each itc,m
with a period. If you go the
semicolon route. you're
supposed to begin each Item
with a lowercase letter. Jf you
use periods at the end of each
Item, begin each with a capital
letter, which makes sense
because the periods make them
like complete sentences.
Elther way. take comfort in
knowing that I needed the help
of three of my colleagues to
figure out these conflicting
rules, so even if you get it
wrong. no one will know.
But the Strong letter writer •
was savvy to this arcane stuff.
He or she even understood an
even trickier use or the
semJcolon. Sometimes the
semicolon Is used between two
clauses that could stand on
their own as sentences, but are
really part of a single Idea: ·vou
are investing In the stocks,
bonds, and other securltJes that
the mutual fund owns; you are
not Investing in Strong."
lsn't that wonderful? You're
looking at one happy Strong
customer.

"I don't know much about the
hoUday. or the people: I just
think that, as a country, we
should not be commemorating
and remembering everything
from other countries," Russ
said. "l don't know that I can
support a country whose
underlying philosophy believes
that we are the devil .... It
would be like having a
commemorative stamp for
Adolf Hitler.·
Whoa. What? First. Bid Is a
relJgious holiday, not linUted to
any one group of people, or one
country, etc. The hoUday Is also
very popular in lndia and guess
where else: here In the Unlted
States. You don't have to be
born In the Middle Bast and
have smooth olive slcln to
belJeve In the teachings of the
Koran.
Rev. Dennis Short, whom I
spoke to later that afternoon,
confirmed that.
Short said he was proud of the
postal service for recognizing
one of the great religions or the
world -"one that has many
adherents here In Orange County
and a number of those who
participate ln the Newpon-Mesa
Irvine Interfaith Council"
(Short ls the president M that
council.)
Russ and I discussed various
views on freedoms and
somehow go1 on the topic of the
misguided food pyramid and
the airport -of course. But the
gist of Russ's argument was how
the country seems to be
catering to extremely Uberal
opinions and honoring
"eVerything under the sun.
"I don't mind Jews celebrating
their holJdays or other people
celebrating their beUefs. but we
have to get back to the
foundation of this country, .. ke
said.
"Uke, freedom of reUgionr I
asked.
''Well, right," he said.
Toward the end of the
conversation he stopped
hlmself and said, "You know, I
am going to have to do more
research on this before I
continue this conveTSatlon."
Russ agreed that blindly
forwarding such vehement
messages without taldng the
time to learn exactly what It is
that Is so "scary.''
"Most people in this busy
world take cel'taln Information
and forward It and believe It as
gospel; Just look at what South
County dJd With the El Toro
airport," he saJd.
Whoa, come bade to me, Russ
-Jet's stay on topic.
"I simply trusted the person
who send It to me," he said. "It
seemed to make sense.•
And who sent It to him?
Former Costa Mesa
Councilwoman Heather
Somers. The reputed watchdog.
The one who recently bad an
unsuccessful run at a seat on
the Orange County Water
District.
She confirmed that she had
sent It when I talked to her
Friday afternoon. She went on
to talk about the sanctity of the
holiday season and used the
term Oiristendom over and
over.
"This Is a Oiristmas holiday
season, and here we are
celebrating a faction of a
religion that is doing everything
It can to annlhilate Christianity."
Somers said during the calm
portion of the conversation. "It
ls not true of all, but It is
definitely true of a faction, and
for us to celebrate that faction
of a MusUm religion and
celebrate that heritage during a
Oiristian season ls
blasphemous."
I asked if she could separate
zealous fanaUca from the true
folJowers of a religion -such as
most Oiristlans distance
themselves from the supposed
"Ouistian" bombings of
abortion clinics and the
supp<ised "Ouistian" emphasis
of the Ku Klux Klan. Somers
suddenly got defensive.
"I don't even want to be
quoted anymore." she said. "If
thJs Is where you are going with
this, I don't even want to be
quoted. It wasn't fot the Pilot to
see anyway. I forwarded this to
my Ouisdan friends, who see
into tht Pilot Cl.ls.si1led~on to find seMce5 from
things the same way I do. l don't
even know how you got ahold of
it. ..
So there it ends. Well, it didn't
really end there, but that ls all l
am ethJcally alJowed to report. ·
Trust me, your not missing
anything profound.
In an effort to check my own
Oiristianity, I called Short. He
quelled my fears and restored
my faith in my faith.
"To blame the vast majority of
the devoutly rellgtous afld
peace-loving adherents to
Islam, I feel, is just not right.•
Short said. "That Is just
amazing."
He also mentioned the
bombings and the KJCK and said
neither of those Is
representative of Ouistlanlty .
and it wouldn't be fair to judge
Oi.rlstians by those acts.
Eld Is also regarded as a day
of remembrance, a day of
harvest. a day of forgiveness
and a day of peace. I suggest we
all embrace the goodness of
that message and remember the.
innocent lives lost In this war
against terrorism, forgive one
another for our closed·mlnded
views and spread peace -not
venomous mass e-mails.
Perhaps Russ said it best:

misguided fanatics .. "

Win would give CdM

Patrick Laverty
Daily Pilot
It's the final week of the
· regular season and not a single
'team from the Newport-Mesa
district has qualified for the
postseason.
Newport Harbor, Corona del
Mar and Costa Mesa still have a
dtance to make the CIF
Southern Section playoffs in ~Ir respective divisions, but
nothing is guaranteed.
Bach school needs a win this
week. For the Sea Kings, n
victory will definitely put them
in the playoffs. n.e Sailors will
likely lock up a spot with a win.
Costa Mesa, on the other hand,
needs some help even with a
victory.
Corona del Mar is the only
team that can receive an
automatic playoff berth. The
Sea Kings (5·3· l , 2· l • l in Pacific
Coast League play) would finish
third In their league by
defeating University Friday at 7
p.m. at Irvine I ligh.
though they lost, 28-21 in
ovd"tfme, to Tesoro Friday, the
ga.J'!'e counts as a Ue for both
teams according to Corona del
Mar Coach Dick Freeman, with
the overtime period played
solely for breaking a tie, should
the teams finish with the same
record in league.
It is a rule instituted by the
league's coaches prior to this
season, Freeman said,
eliminating the need to flip a
com should teams tie with the
same record.
"We did it to make the playoff
thlog easier, but not to hurt the
team that (lost in overtime)."
Freeman said. "There's no real
reason to play overtime because
the losing team's bener off with
a.Jie. Give me a choice and we'll
sttck with the tie."
Tesoro, which plays
Northwood this week. and
Corona del Mar could both
finish league with 3· l-1 records.
But the Titans will go into the
playoffs as the league's No. 2

Getting to six wins was a
difficult task for Harbor, which

at halftime Friday. But after
losing its first three league
games by a combined 13 points,
the Sailors seemed to get over
the hump in the second half,
though it took a rare
motivational speech from
Brinltley at halftime.

said. "I've had teams ever since
I started coaching at Excelsior,
we've had teams without very
good records, but that alwar-o
gave a lot of effort. I wasn't
really seeing that effort from
our guys."
That changed in the second
half as the Sailors held Laguna
Hills scoreless and scored 15
unanswered points. The key
was a goal-line stand that
turned the Hawks away after
they had recovered a fumble at
the Sailors' 7-yard line.
"I don't know if the intensity
goes up or what happens,•
Brink.ley said of the defense's
effort on the ensuing four plays.

Though a win would give the
Mustangs six victories, there
could be as rnany as two other
teams with seven wins also
vying for the lone at-large berth.
La Serna (7-2), the most likely
candidate, won its first seven
games of the season, but has to
play Santa Fe, ranked No. 1 in
the division, this week. A loss
would knock La Serna out of
the top three spots in the Del
Rio League.
Perldns, who will submit the
Mustangs' bid for a playoff spot
as the Golden West League
representative, said that part of
the at-large process comes
down to how a team finishes
the season. With a loss this
week, La Serna will have
dropped three straight games.
The Mustangs, if they can
defeat Santa Ana, will have won
two of their last three.
"We've only lost to teams that
are playoff teams," Perlcins said.
"We've beaten Huntington
Beach, who is a Division I team.
We've been ran.Iced in the top 10
all year. I think we'd be a good
representative."
If the Mustangs don't reach
the playoffs, it would be a
crushing blow to a senior-laden
team that won the Golden West
League title last season.
"It'd be very disappointing,"
Perkins said. "But things ju.st
haven't gone our way when we
needed them to go our way."
lf Costa Mesa is to have any
hope of avoiding that
disappointment, It will have to
