--movie maladies
A strange thing happened the other night.
I was standing in line at the concession counter of a
Newport Beach movie theater, waiting to get my ration of
popcorn. The movte was due to start in about three minutes
and the queues were still long -two people in front of me,
five behind, and about the same number in another line.
The young woman working the counter filled a medium
10ft drink and reached for one of those horrid p1utic lids 1
they put on sodas these days -but her companion attendant
had just used the last one.
She looked at the customer, put on a confuaed
expression and pronounced: "We're out of lids."
Nary a word to the cust.omer. No, "Do you mind not
having a lid?" No, "Excuae me while I look for aome more."
No anything.
She scurried to the other end of the counter and began
pawing throllgh supplies.
We waited. F1ndin8 none there, she enlisted the aid of the other
counter penon, and the two of them headed for the
storeroom.
We waited.
. The 90UDd of cardboard ripping and boxes moving came
from the back.
We waited.
The tint strains of music from the previews filtered
from inside the theater.
We waited.

The entire incident bothered me then -and it still
bothers me. I don't know whether it was a statement on the
theater industry, a statement on the priorities of today's
young people or a statement on my own impatience. Surely
it w• a sta1ement on aomething.
I do know that movies aren't aa enjoyable as they u.ed
to be bec:k when I started going 30 years ago. They're
pnaJJer, dir11er and the crowds are noisier. U all you want
to do is watch -and hear -the film, you're like Rodney
Dangerfield: you don't get no respect!
When t started attending movies, the "OODCelllion stand
had no lids (the eoft drinks were only 10 oenta, too, but that's
another editorial). Or, if they did, they were for the
convenience of parent. with smaller children who didn't
want their offapring spilling the stuff.
Now the movies treat us all like 6-year-olds and make
us all take lids and straws. I know. I try everytime to refu8e
the things -first becau.e my thirst is never quenched
wUe9a my lips get wet, and eecond, becauae I know it takes
a minute drop of pn!dous oil to make the plastic uaed ln each
lid and I like to COD8e1Ve, even Jn such a small way.
-Maybe the theatef' owners should atop trying to control
the habita of adulta u if they were children. Banning tbme
stupid lids might even ~ the movie indimtry to ·113
glorious daY1 of yesteryear.
I mean. if people had to pay attention to their drink to
make sure it didn't end up in their own laps. maybe they'd
pay attention to the film, too.
Then we could all enjoy the show.

Witherspoon. a "Who'• He?"' ln a "Who's Who"

Holmes, ~t in a 10-year career which
tncludm 43 victories and 30 knock.outs, looked like a
man searching for the nearest exit. Terrible Tim
