1euue runs. 'fodd Nicholson, the league's
executive director, said Honig's
IUpport for their program oon-
firma members' beliefs that bwli-
nem and industry do have a stake
in the public school system.
The $100,000 would go primar-
ily toward developing more
educational programs matching
achool cw'riculum with first-hand
expoewe in the world of free
enterpriae, he explained.
The programs, he noted, are far
different than the simple tours of
industrial plants common in past
times.
Nicholson offered this example
of how the exposure might work:
In their freshman year, students
might aee a business representa-
tive in class as a lecturer.
Sophomores might meet in
~ groups with the business
spokesman in a more thorough
aeaaion.
Juniors would get some 90rt of
on-site experience learning how
the business work.a. Seniors
would get more aophisticated
lel!llOllS, with a number of qualify-
ing students spending part of
their school days as unpaid in-
terns.
The idea tor the program came
from league members who sev-
eral years ago said they were
diacovering that many applicants
for entry level jobs weren't
academically prepared, said
Nicbolaoo.
"Business became convinced
we couldn't just point the finger
.at the educational system but we
needed to get involved," he said.
Tickets for the dinner and
Honig's speech are $25 each.
Reeervations are required by Fri-
day.

Orllnge Coat DAILY PILOT/Tueed-V, Mey 31, 1983
Let's not start
this again
' ''' For anyone who tuned in to the Democratic Party's
Jfational fundraiaing telethon unpre~ It was an
lesson In the use of a mass medium for
indoctrination.
, e Republicans, you may have noticed, have been.
resuJ,arly sponsoring 60 aecond ucommercials" , along the
lines of aome laundry detergent campaigns, where a chatty
~ddle-aged woman talks frankly to you at home about the
benefits of her product ... in the GOP's case, President
Reegan.
The Democrats haven't tried that approach with any
fervor, but they have resurrected an old favorite, the
telethon, to bring the bucks for the coming election year
campaigns.
• For those of us who grew up with Jerry Lewis bringing
tean to our eyes round the clock with touching stories of
children who need money for medical servioes, the fonnat
of last weekend's political marathon was not unfamiliar.
There were stars from TV, the movies, Las Vegas,
linging and dancing and narrating their hearts out, always
ending up with a plug for the Democrats and a pit.ch for
your cash-pledging phone call.
But another old familiar image may have crept into the
weekend's big political show. A controversy now raging is
not about the quality of the $6 million production, but about
whether the Republic.ans' made aooncerted effort to jam up
the pledge phone lines, and i.f that campaign can ~
CQDSidered aa sabotage, restraint of business, and a few
other less than honorable classifications.
GOP leaden say they had no part in the "outpouring
of positive sentiment for President Reagan" that telethon
phone volunteers listened to for hours. But nobody's
denying that a ~legram outlining such line-jamming
strategies was sent out nationwide to Republican leaders.
Dirty tricks?
Maybe. And maybe not.
But we think it's time our political parties, and their
memben, grew up.
The electiop of presidents, congressmen, state and local
.representatives are just too pivitol a part of our free political
'system to be tampered with like this.
If there was a national effort to jam up the telethon
·phone lines with crank calls, we think it's a national
~tlisgrace. Anyone who participated in such a childish and
destructive adventure ought have to pass a basic civics test
before being allowed to vote again.
This country lived throught the turmoil and dissent.
the agonizing self-examination and national pillorying that
.went with Watergate. It's a lesson that, one hoped, was
learned for all time.
Let's not start th.is nonaense again.
The issue.a facing ua in the ctWDing decade are thoee of
.ijfe and death. Whether we have food to eat, roofs over our
lieada, clean air, non-polluted water, and a planet on which
to walk. talk and grow.
The men and women we elect to public office will make
many of thoee decisions for ua. Let's make sure they're the
best people for the job. And that the standards of honesty
and integrity we ask of them are standards we aa
individuals have already met.

'Remington' worth a look
By FRED ROTHENBERG AIT........_..._
NEW YOJlK (AP) -Here's a mystery
worthy of the best TV sleuth. Why ia the
vapid "Hart to Hart" 17th in the yearly
ratings while the clever "Remington
Steele" is 61at? .
The answer might be buried in a recent
report by Television Audience
Aa1 oent Inc., which meuured in early
1982 pl'08ralDS for both their entertain-
ment ftlne (Program Appeal Index) and
their emotional and intellectual stimu-
latklo (Program Impact Index).
Thia survey was done before "Rem-
ington Steele" had its premiere last fall.
but the results for "Hart to Hart" may be
instructive. The ABC! 8elies, produced by
master popcOl'D-popper A.arm Spelling,
rated well above averaae in appeal, but
way below In impect.
One deduction may be that many
viewers prefer to be mjndleMly enter-
