"The word ltaelf la fraught with confusion
becaUle it wu a slang word," said Lawrence
Gwhee, jus h1a1orian at the University of llllnoia.
Gushee wu one of six juz hiatoriana who

~ oo tb$ ~of juz. one of the Hot Jaz:z
Cl.me eventl aporwored by Tulane University.
What they do know about the word lteelf ia that
the fint time lt was printed wu in a San Franciaoo
journal in 1912. Presumably, in San Francia:o jazz
wu an lnnoeent new word. Not 90 in New Orleans.
0 1 talked to a lot o1 muaiclans of that day -like
Jelly Roll Morton and Alphonse Picou -and they
all bad a very negative attitude toward the word,"
said e7-year-old Al Rose, a one-time jau im-
premario.
"They all associated it with obscene meanings
r -a dirty word."
The word itself is just one thing that puzzles jazz
' acholara.
Jazz was a music different than all that had
gone before it -so where did it come from? Exactly
• how did it develop? What impelled it? Trying to pin
all that down la fruatratlng. Scholan Uke data neat
and clean. Jui la not.
At this point, jazz buft.. are begtnnina to feel
that the picture of juz put toseftlet by ooncenaua in
the early 19309 may be out of focus.
F.arly reeearchers agreed that jazz wu born in
New Orleana, en>bably conoelved at the al.ave dancea
at old Congo Square, where bi.cka mixed African
rhythm with the European harmony they heard
from whites.
''Twenty years ago, everyone would have
agreed with. that, but now maybe not," uid S .
Frederick Starr. "A lot of information la be~ eorted
out and it may tell ua 110methlng difierent. •
Starr, a reed-allm Ph.D, la pn!llident-elect of
Oberlin College in Ohio, a job likely to drag him
away from his favorite hobby -blowing clarinet on
the Louisiana Repertory Jau Enaemble, which tears
it up on Wednesday nighta at Mu.nater'a dance hall,
when it isn't off touring Russia or dashing off a
concert.
''They're going to come up to Oberlin and play
when I am inaugurated," Starr said with a plealed
grin.
The' heretical notion being kicked around by
Starr and other jazz acholars is that jan was
flowering at the same time in 1everal areea, not just
in Congo Square or the New Orie~ red light
district but alao in San Franciaco, Charleston, S.C.,
Mobile, Ala., Memphis, Tenn. and parts of Florida.

It's hard to argue the fact that the names of
Mom Hart. Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill will be
forever enshrined in theater's hall of fame, but even
the greatest can have an off day once in a while.
Tbeee three h.ad theirs in collaboration some 40
years ago with "Lady in the Dark," an aimless,
1 meandering musical constructed around the fragile
plot of a career woman who has enormous difficulty
making up her mind. About anything-business,
romance. you name it.
Shakespeare once wrote a play about a fellow
with the same problem, but his "Hamlet" had
magnitude and dimension, something sorely lacking
in "Ledy in the Dark." Hart's characters are 90 fuzzy
and wishy-washy, one finds it hard to work up
suf:f:ident enthusiasm about them, or to care what
happens to them. the title figure in particular.

by a cast which appears generally indifferent. at

It is particularly abeent in the perfonnance of Diane
Marlin in the leading role. Marlin has the perfect'
opportunity to cont.rut her mousy real-life character
with the red hot mama of her dream sequences, but
by and large they are far too similar.
AB for her three romantic interest&-Ted Knorr
as the older publisher, RUBS Munaon as the matinee
idol and Patrick Healey as the combative business
associate-only the latter generates any degree of
character. Again, contrast ia demanded and too little
is offered. Roee Mellin 18 acceptable as Marlin's usistant,
but she too could spice up her character a bit. The
comic roles of the flighty section editors who are
usually at each other's throats are splendidly done
by Rochelle Savitt and John Walsh, who freshen the
stage each time they appear.
The-show's first act is overlong and underdone,
but things perk up in the second, thanb primarily
to a circua-trial dream sequence that gives each
principal player the chance to amplify his or her
charact.er.

what would you Uke to do

Partner is a pasted hand. A

NEW YORK -lt'f hard to follow one hit role
with another. Juet uk this put .....,.. ~;
McLean Stewmon, Bea Arthur, Sally Stnltben and
Rock Hudaon. But Bob Newhart hu done it by glvfna viewers what they wanted -Bob Newhart.
"Newhart," the moet popular pl'08l'alJl in·
troduced by the networu Jut fall and the~ new
lleries brought beck for another leUOI\ by , wu
sucoe-.ful becaUle executive pl'Ocluoer Barry Kemp
and Newhart himaelf didn't tamper too much with
Succe98.
They didn't make Newhart an oaf, a
wild-and-crazy bachelor, or have him preside over
a real variety show -u he did in 1961 in a vehicle
that lasted just eight months.
But they did allow Newhart to assert the same
cool, calm, comedic face, which audiences h.l&d found
90 comfortable. 1n changing from Bob Hartley to
Dick Loudon, Newhart remained the same. Only the
situations, settingJ and foils changed.
"Bob is'-laid-back, everyman kind of character
with aott. subtle comedy," aaya Kemp.
Constructing a new show around an old
penonna, and making lt look fresh, I.a not easy. "The
Bob Newhart Show," in which Newhart played
psychologist Bob Hartley, went off the air in 1978
and atlll .is aeen in rerun. Kemp couldn't do that
show again, yet he couldn't stray too far, either.
"We didn't want to be intentionally different
just to be different," says Kemp.
rundown b(>t.el. But then Kemp recalled the play
"Oeorae WuhJ.nat.on Slept Hete," and the movie "t4r. Blandino Builcl8 Hit Dreamhou.e," and
~l, "lt would be. good mamaae o_f ldeaa.''
So Newhart became a Oedgl.lng innkeeper tn
Vermont who made tu. living writing clo-it.-you.rwelf
booka. "People did not have a hard time teeina Bob
do1ng what he'a doing," aays Kemp. "It wasn't Jarrlni blalcally becawie he's the same pe.1'*>nna."
One difference between "Newhart" and ·~
Bob Newhart Show" la that the new 9eriea ia on tape,
rather t.ti.n on tum. Tape is about $80,000 cheaper
per episode, is easier to edit and haa a more realistic
look, particularly in indoor aetttno.
"But mistakes are more glaring on tape," aays
Kemp, who klet the fight with CBS for film. Kemp
believe. a show about a rustic inn ahould have a rich.
:outdoor photography. To undentand the difference,
watch the ahow'a opening credits. which are the only
.egment. on film.
And while you're at it. lilt.en to the tone aet by
Henry M.andn.i'a gentle, accompanyins muaic. Th.is
theme now can be heard on Muzak in elevators and
at the dentist's office. ''That's when we knew we
made it." aaya Kemp.
Actually, "Newhart," acheduled after
'LM-A-S-H," was an immediate h1l last fall. It
finished the aeuon u the 13th hlghest~rated
program.

Goat-to-hero· day. for Sirninorls
MILWAUKEE (AP) -You an teue
Ted Si.mmont about his notorious bick of
speed, about how they Ume him' with a
calendar, rather than a stopwatch, in the
4-0-yard dash.
But don't try to teaae him with a
hanging breaking pitch.
The Angela' Andy H.ualer tried that
Sunday. Simmona, who.e admitted
bone-headed baae running had <mt
Milwaukee a tying run in the eeventh
Inning, alammed a two-run homer off
Hasaler in the ninth, rallying the Brewers
to a ~_.. victory over the Angela.
''The goat-to-hero-thing CJ"088ed my
mind when I went to bat," Simmons said.
"But I didn't think I would get too much
to hit.
"I.knew I would get no bit bUla," he
aaid. "A home run wu the lut thin.I on
my mind. With one ou1 and a man on
.econd, I just told fnY9ell to relax and not
try to do too much."
Simmons' hue-running odyaey oc-
curred in the leVerlth after he had
doubled home c.edl Cooper to cut the
Brewen' deficit to 4-3.
Gorman Thomas hit a lfOUl"der to
ahortatop Tim Foll and Sbnmona, break-
ing for third bue, would have been out
by 20 feet. ,But Foll threw over the head
of third balf"!Mln Doua DeC1ncea for an
error, and Simmona wu safe.
Ben Osllvie then bit. fiy bell to n,ht
fielder Reggie Jacklon. Simmons tagged
up and appeared to have ax>red on a
ucrifice fly. But the Anpi. appee.led,
and when pitcher Lull Sanchez threw to
DeC1ncel' at third, Simmons WU called
out for havfnc left third hue before

'"nlen are five ways to set from

He admitted be left tlUrd bale before

Dodgers' goal
against Braves:
Score some runs
~ ANG~ (AP) --Loa
Angels Manager Tom Luorda
wu aaked to evaluate the per-
fonnanoe Sunday of Mookie
WU.00.. the New York Mets' re-
silient center fielder.
"Mookie Wu.on was outstand-
ing,.. aaid Luorda. "He took
away a three-run homer, he made
two outstanding catches and
drove in the wi.nn.ing run. What
more can you aa'f'!''
Not much. That llWD9 it up
rather well.
And the Meta beat the Dodgers,
4-2, to earn a split in the
four-pme weebnd lleries.
Both clubs are idle today. The
Meta move on to Chicago to begin
a three-game aeries with the Cuba
while the~ the team with
the best record in baaeball (3~-16)
go to Atlanta to meet the Braves,
the team with the .econd-best
record (34-18).
''We've got to start 800fing more
runa," I...aorda uid on the heels
of Sunday'• km to the Meta "The
lut three pines we've ICOred two
rum. two n.ana and two runa. The
only way to beet that is to give up
I ,'
one, one and one, and we did that
only once."
The Dodgers got decent enough
pitching all four gi>..me9, and they
could very well have won the two
games they lost.
But they didn't., and imteed of
going into Atlanta with a little
cushion, they go in only 1 1-2 pmes in front in the National
League West. .
And the biggest reuon la
Wllaon. wu.on not only knocked ln the
tie-breaking run Sunday, he also
took a three-run homer away
from Pedro Guerrero in.the first
i.nnin£ with an astounding leap,
his glove clearly over --and be-
hind --the fence, and in the ninth
he took a . p<mibly critical e,:tra
base hit away from Steve Yeager
with a diving catch.
Aho. on Friday night, he took a
homer away from Greg Brock
with a similar leaping catch.
"I Just try to get to the ball,"
said the peraonable WiJ8or\. who
got to it considerably more often
that the Dodgers did. ••All I can do
la jump." .
