March 28, 1955
The City Council of the City of Newport Beach met in regular
session in the Council Chamber of the City Hall at the hour of 7030
P.M.
The roll was called the following members being present:
Councilmen Bennett, Stoddard, Higbie, Ridderhof, Hill, Councilmen
Wilder and MacKay being absent.
On motion of Councilman Bennett, seconded by Councilman Higbie
and carried, the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was
waived and they were declared approved as written.

On motion of Councilman Bennett, seconded by Councilman Higbie
and carried, the regular order of business was waived to permit the
consideration of Planning Commission recommendations on the appli-
cations of Mr. and Mrs. James Van Every and Donald Metz for variances.

' The Newport Beach Fire and Police Protective League, in accord-
ance with Articl.-e 7,Section 71C of the Charter, submitted a list of
five (5) men for consideration of appointment to the Civil Service
Board. Councilman. Ridderhof nominated Albert E. Stockton and T.
Weston Jay. The nominations were seconded by Councilman Stoddard.
On motion of Councilman Wilder, seconded by Councilman Higbie and
carried,nominations were closed and Albert L. Stockton and T. Weston
Jay were appointed to the Civil Service Commission.
The Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, submitted an
estimate of $2,625.00 as a probable cost of a special census. On
motion of Councilman Bennett, seconded by Councilman Stoddard, the
City Manager was authorized to arrange for the special census, and
that the money be appropriated from the Contingency Fund, by the
