HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-01-1955 - Special Meeting1 n f August 1, 1955 The City Council of the City of Newport Beach met in the City Hall at the hour of 4 :C0 P.M. for a Special Meeting called by Mayor Hill, for the purpose of considering and acting upon the request of the Union Oil Company to make available for inspection the information and data in possession of the City received under its oil drilling and operation agreement with the Monterey Oil Company, and to consider the annexation of certain uninhabited territory adjacent to irvine Terrace. Consent and Waiver of Notice having been signed by seven members ofvthe Council, and now on file in the City Clerk's office, Mayor Hill called the meeting to order. The roll was called, the following members being present: Councilmen: Bennett, Wilder, MacKay, Stoddard, Higbie, Ridderhof and Hill. A discussion was had as to the letter of July 22, 1955 received from the Onion Oil Company and previously discussed by the Council at the meeting of July 25. It was agreed to dispense with the reading of the letter. Mr. Samuel Barnes, attorney for the Union Oil Company, spoke from the floor and suggested that the Monterey Oil Company present its argu- ments against making available the requested records and Mr. Martin Erk of the Monterey Oil Company spoke from the floor. He presented a letter from Mr. E. E. Pyles of the Monterey Oil Company which was directed to the City Council and dated August 1, 1955. Mr. Erk stated that the deci- sion at hand was a matter of principle and fairness to keep confidential the scientific research made by the Monterey Oil Company. Mr. Barnes then presented the arguments on behalf of the Union Oil Company. A fur- ther discussion was had by the Council, and a motion was made by Council- man Bennett, seconded by Councilman Wilder and carried, denying the re- quest of the Union Oil Company by the following roll call vote, to wit: 3lecial Meeting for purpse of consd and actin- upon req. of Union gil Co. to corsid. anr..cx. of uninhibited terr. adj. to Irvine Terr.
