Comment 6: Please provide recommendations for pool design and setback from top of
slope per section 6.12 of the November 12,1998, Leighton compaction report and Section
1806.5.4 of the 1997 UBC. Include recommendation for the spa too. Also, should
subdrainage be provided and will the pool excavation encounter the Loffel wall grids?
Please provide appropriate recommendations. Include recommendations for spa.
Response 6: The recommendations for pool/ spa ware listed as follows:
a) The proposed swimming pool/ spa should be designed for low expansion soil.
b) The pool/spa should have a setback of one sixth of the height of the slope or a
minimum of horizontal distance of 7 feet, and to a maximum of 10 feet with subdrain
system be installed under the pool/spa. The bottom of the footing of the pool/spa/
utility room should be deeper than the creep zone of 3 feet below ground surface and
slope setback.
c) The pool/spa wall should be designed for an equivalent fluid pressure of 75 pounds
per cubic foot. Over -excavation and re -compaction of at least 2 feet below the bottom
of the proposed pool/spa is required. The pool/spa should be designed assumed a total
loss of soil support for the upper portion located within the creep zone or setback
beyond the creep zone.
d) The swimming pool/spa should be designed for any possible surcharge load should
the pool fall within a 45 -degree projection from the nearby structures.
e) Subdrain should be installed under the pool/spa.
t) The swimming pool/ spa deck should be cast free of the pool. Water stops should be
provided between the bond beams and the deck.
g) All plumbing and pool/ spa features should be absolutely leak -free.
h) The bottom of the swimming pool/spa should be founded entirely into certified
compacted fill. The excavation of swimming pool/spa should be inspected and
approved by the representative of this firm.
For lot 31, no Loffel wall was constructed.
Comment 7: Please provide settlement (total and differential) of the fill itself. Indicate.
over what minimum horizontal distance, differential settlement will occur for both fill
settlement and that due to building loads.
Response 7: Based on our field investigation and laboratory testing, the engineering
calculations for the potential settlement of the site were performed. The calculated
potential settlement is less than one inch, the differential settlement will be less than 0.5
