Harbor Day School Front Carpool Proposal and Statistics
Morning Front Carpool:
Morning front carpool starts at 7:30 and ends at 8:OOam. Currently,6 to 8 administrators and teachers open doors for
students at the front carpool while one teacher provides traffic control in the morning.
Afternoon Front Carpool:
Carpool Statistics,dated October 2012-June 2013(see Front Carpool Statistics Oct 2012-June 2013),indicate an
average of 77 cars use the afternoon front carpool from a period of time between 2:40 and 3:20pm. There has been no
change in student enrollment to necessitate updated statistics. At its peak, just after 3:OOpm,approximately 60 cars will
be queued up waiting to pick up their child in the queuing area across Pacific View Drive.
Staffing for Afternoon Front Carpool:
Currently each grade level has a teacher assigned to it and twelve teachers open doors and help direct traffic.(See Front
Carpool Staffing Map).
Front Carpool Procedures:
When arriving to pick up students, cars will line up in four lines in the Carpool Queuing Area.At 3:00,two teachers
(orange dots)will be positioned in the Carpool Queuing Area.Seven teachers(red dots)and a Carpool Pickup Area
Captain(magenta dot)will be positioned in the Pickup Area. The Queuing Captain will motion cars when it is safe and
time to leave the Queuing Area and enter the school Pickup Area.
Once motioned, those cars will enter the Pickup Area and form two lines. The Carpool Pickup Area Captain will call their
names on a loudspeaker and indicate the numbered area(indicated by a cone)in the Pickup Area where the students can
meet their carpool.Six teachers(blue dots)will manage the students waiting for the cars and help them hear the name
and number of their cars.Teachers assigned to the Pickup Area(red dots)will escort students to cars, open doors, and
assure safe conditions before cars move out of the Pickup Area.Once all cars are loaded and students are clear of traffic,
the cars will exit the Pickup Area and a new set of cars will be motioned into the driveway.
Harbor Day School teachers and staff are trained in this procedure each year.
San Joaquin Hills Road Pick-uo and Drop-off:
This proposal will not change the current pick-up and drop-off operations that take place on San Joaquin Hills Road.
Students currently enter through a pedestrian gate to access the school from San Joaquin Hills Road. The location of this
gate will be moved to the west and accessed by stairs. Moving the proposed access point will improve traffic flow by
utilizing the full length of the drop-off area rather than stopping short to have closer access to the existing gate.
