What Is a Monorail? A monorail is a railway in which the track consists of a single rail on which trains can travel on a dedicated -use track. First developed at the turn of the twentieth century, monorails have continually captured a sense of brave curiosity for the futury ahead, embodying a spirit of innovation and industriousness. It's use as a form of public transit has been implemented with great success in leading cities across the globe, including Tokyo, Shanghai, Seattle, & even here in our own backyard at the Disneyland Resort! Why Monorail? • Compared to other forms of public transit, monorails take up considerably less space for construction and use. Stations and tracks can be elevated using pre-existing center medians on thoroughfares, and eminant domain claims are minimized. • Construction and operation costs are comparable to older forms of public transit (ie. subway, elevated rail, surface heavy rail). • Quiet operation drastically reduces noise pollution to surrounding homes & businesses. • Significantly greener form of transportation with major reductions in air pollution. • Smooth, quiet, pleasant commutes. FAQ Q: How much will this project cost? A: The project is estimated to cost $1.4 billion for construction of tracks, stations, and right of ways. While this might be a daunting figure, it should be noted that the city spent roughly $150 million on just the new City Hall. Furthermore, this would be split amongst the cities involved in the project. The operation costs are estimated to be roughly $10 million per year. Q: How will funding be obtained? A: The majority of the funding would come from bond issuances in order to prevent any rise in taxes. Federal and state subsidies for green infrastructure could be applied for, as well as avenues for public-private partnerships. Q: How long will construction take? A: It is estimated based on historical data, that a monorail project of this size would take roughly 12 years to complete. Q: How will this affect property values? A: We estimate that this monorail would increase residential and commercial property values through the decrease in vehicle congestion, lack of noise and air pollution, and increase in tourism. Architectural studies would be conducted to ensure that household views are not impeded. Proposed Harbor -Rail System This system would be a five -city project, servicing Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, and Irvine.
