Subject: Marine Avenue trees
Dear Mayor Dixon,
I write on behalf of the board of directors and members of Preserve Orange County, the county's historic
preservation advocacy group. We are a tax-exempt charity based in Santa Ana, established in 2016.
We support the efforts of Jody Patrich and the Balboa Island Preservation Association (BIPA) to defend the
historic streetscape of Marine Avenue. The lemon -gum eucalyptus trees are integral to this landscape, and have
provided an indelible sense of place to residents and visitors alike.
In considering the decision of the Parks, Beach & Recreation Commission of September 3, 2019 following a
rigorous community debate, we strongly urge you to:
a) vote to uphold the commission's recommendations concerning the trees; and
b) require city staff to enable broad participation from the BIPA in the decision to select an arborist for testing
the trees, and in the testing process itself.
We also recommend that the City fund a historic resources survey of Marine Avenue to identify significant
buildings and landscape elements. This would provide essential guidance for any currently proposed and future
development under consideration in the survey area.
Preserve Orange County is available to you or city staff any time to discuss the benefits of a survey for the area.
Sincerely,
Krista Nicholds
President

Subject: Marine Ave. and trees on Balboa Island
To our City Council and the Newport Beach Commission,
So many residents of Balboa Island, of which I am one, truly desire to keep the iconic trees on Marine
Ave. They present a lovely picture as you come over the bridge. Hopefully, you feel the same way about
them. In tandem with the trees are the shops and sidewalks. It saddens me to see so many of our sweet, unique
shops leaving our island and being replaced with unattractive stores that are tacky and out -of -place. I realize
this is not part of the tree issue but it does fall in line with the fact that our island is losing its charm and sense of
history. I am hoping the city will realize what we are losing before it is too late to save our charming little
island.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and giving me an opportunity to express my concerns.
