Balboa Island/Corona del Mar Concept
Requests from Balboa Island community (Balboa Island
Marketing, Inc. and Balboa Island Improvement Association)
and Corona del Mar community to consider improved
neighborhood mobility through transit options
➢ Limited parking and congestion are perceived as barriers to
the mobility of Residents and Visitors
Consider service similar to Balboa Peninsula Trolley or a Ride
Hail Circulator?
■ Improve access and mobility within Balboa Island and
Corona del Mar communities
■ Connect to Newport Center

■ Visitors park in remote parking lot — shuttled to/from the island
■ Preliminary operating estimate for summer season: $70,000/year
■ Summer weekends with Memorial Day, 4t" of July and Labor Day Holidays
■ One van shuttle
■ Van shuttle with fixed route/stops
➢ Concern — fixed -route and limited service may not provide enough ridership to
justify and maintain service
➢ Not easily adapted to include other surrounding neighborhoods
➢ Potentially not eligible for grant funding
➢ Large Vehicle — not well suited for narrow/crowded areas
On -Demand Circulator Concept
Balboa Island/Corona del Mar
Potential Benefits:
■ Provide added connectivity to businesses, restaurants, City facilities and neighborhoods
■ Potentially reduced congestion and parking demand in impacted areas
■ Improve access and connectivity to high coastal communities and Newport Center for
Residents and Visitors
Considerations:
■ Ridership
■ Larger area requires more vehicles to maintain reasonable headways
■ Where will vehicles be stored/charged/maintained
■ ADA requirements
■ Can only operate on roadways with speed limit <35mph
■ Smaller Vehicle — better suited for narrow/crowded areas
■ Agreement with Private Property owners for route connection
