COMPUTER SYSTEM
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City sign a purchase agreement with Dynix, Inc., an
Ameritech Co., Provo, Utah, for the computer system for the new Central Library
and the branches. Contract cost, including the computer system and peripherals, is
$249,304.00. In addition, the City will pay directly the sales tax on the contract in
the amount of $19,321.06. Total cost is $268,625.06. Funds for the system have
been provided to the City by the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation.
Discussion
A new computer system is required for providing library services at the new
Central Library and the branches. The new system will allow the library to
support more users, including City staff through the wide area network, residents
from home or office as well as the 900,000 customers in the library facilities. The
system will provide more information resources, including an electronic
dictionary, magazine indexes and full text of magazine articles. Most importantly,
it will provide an effective use of technology and electronic information while
efficiently utilizing personnel resources.
The City has been a satisfied customer of Dynix, Inc. since 1987. The leading
turnkey vendor of library systems, Dynix has been selected to convert and upgrade
the Library's existing system.
