increasingly challenging future; and
'PWEUAS, appro,�imately ten percent of the residents of ,9Vewport Beach and many of the adults
employed within the City are lacking the literacy skills necessary to meet these challenges; and
'PWEREAS, lack of literacy skills impacts not only their lives and the lives of their families, but their
ability to work productively, and their -full participation as citizens, residents, and employees of our
City; and
UMEREAS, NewportlWesa ProLiteracy, a program of the Newport Beach Public Library works with
adults seeking to develop their literacy skill to empower them to achieve greater success in their lives —
at home, at world and in the community; and
WffEREAS, Newport/9llesa ProLiteracy has, along with other literacy programs around the State,
offered virtual literacy events this September in recognition of National Literacy 5wonth and in
o6servance of InternationalLiteracy Day.
NOW,, WERETORE, I, Will O'Neill, .911ayor of the City of Newport Beach, do hereby proclaim
Septem6er 22, 2020, as
