VOLUNTEERS ADVOCATING FOR CORONA DEL MAR RESIDENTIAL QUALITY OF LIFE SINCE 1987
November 23, 2020
Jeff Herdman
Councilperson
City of Newport Beach
100 Civic Center Dr.
Newport Beach, CA 92660
Dear Councilman Herdman:
The Corona del Mar Residents Association (CdMRA) wants to thank you for your
decades of service to the City of Newport Beach, including the last four years as
council member, and for supporting CdMRA.
2020 was called the year of the volunteer and nobody volunteers more time than
our city council members, especially this year. We realize that this was a very
difficult year to be a councilperson, that difficult decisions needed to be made, and
that residents had very different opinions what those decisions should be. We
appreciate your patience and attention to listening to our residents when making
those difficult decisions.
We appreciate your support and input on the many committees that you
participated in, especially the Aviation Committee and Water Quality/Coastal
Tidelands Committee. Your work as chair on the Aviation Committee has resulted
in more restrictions on John Wayne airport that will benefit our community for
many years to come.
We appreciate your support of the residents of Corona del Mar and CdMRA these
last four years through your attendance at our monthly meetings and annual
meetings, and through support of our ideas and areas of concern, e.g., short-term
lodging. You will be missed!
Sincerely,
3334 EAST COAST HIGHWAY # 179 CA P.O. BOX 1500 f6) CORONA DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA 92625

RE: Residential Refuse and Recvclina Collection Program
Dear City Council,
attended LA County Sanitation Districts' virtual tour of their anaerobic digestion facility. It was
educational. People asked all kind of questions. Could CR&R offer one to Newport Beach?
According to the FDA, "In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the
food supply." Think of the water and energy used to produce the wasted food, and the damages to
water and air qualities in its journey from farm to landfill. Yet, food waste releases methane.
According to the EPA, "Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic GHG after carbon
dioxide (CO2), accounting for about 20 percent of global emissions. Methane is more than 25 times as
potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere... Because methane is both a powerful
greenhouse gas and short-lived compared to carbon dioxide, achieving significant reductions would
have a rapid and significant effect on atmospheric warming potential."
In 4/2019, CR&R's Dean Ruffridge said at Speak Up Newport that 20% of the people in OC went to bed
hungry. COVID made it worse. Food insecurity is daily news. Those, who can still afford plenty of food,
must be mindful with food waste, particularly during the holiday season.
On 11/13, OC Register reported, "The United States accounts for 4% of the global population but
produces more than 30% of its waste." On 10/30, National Geographic reported, "the United States is
by far the world's largest generator of plastic waste... less than 10 percent of American plastic waste
is recycled."
During the special council meeting in Jan., Mayor Pro Tem Avery mentioned the book Zero Waste
Home. I hope we can start a zero waste program, educate people how to enjoy the same level of
quality of life with less waste. Thanks!
