Justification and Required Findings
1. The requested modification will be compatible with existing development in the neighborhood in
that the signage is not excessive and is presented in a professional manner. The design is consistent
with other Jaguar dealers in Southern California.
2. The modification is being pursued in order to allow signs in excess of 30% of the maximum allowed
sign area. While the proposed signage are larger than the existing, Jaguar will be removing 6 signs
facing Jamboree (Aston Martin Service, Jaguar w/ Logo, Aston Martin, Newport Beach, Land Rover
and Range Rover) and replacing them with 2 wall signs (Jaguar w/ Logo – 116.03 SF , & Land Rover w/
logo – 147.47 SF) Sign one will exceed the allowable SF with a sign program (97.5 SF) by 18.53 SF.
Sign two will exceed the allowable by 49.97 SF.
The architectural scale of the building supports the proposed signs in their size and design.
While the proposed Pylon Sign (#19) is under the 20’ height limit (10’-10”) and is under the SF allowed
(37.35 SF), there are also two pedestrian oriented informational signs along with 3 vehicular
directional signs proposed. The Newport Beach Sign Code does not specifically address information
signs or vehicular directional signs (these are not “tenant” directional sign nor do they include
identification that is meant to be viewed from the street).
Jaguar wants to keep a cohesive look to the sign design package to promote a professional
appearance and so they are requesting a modification on these signs also.
The Dealership is maintaining a consistent brand with other Jaguar dealerships in Southern California.
3. The Zoning code intent is to allow for effective signage without creating a proliferation of signs.
Jaguar will be reducing the amount of signage but slightly increasing the size of some.
4. Jaguar feels that by reducing the number of signs facing the ROW but allowing for a greater size to
maximize visibility without overwhelming the architectural integrity of the building, this modification
provides a reasonable alternative without proving detrimental to surrounding owners and occupants.
5. Allowing an increase in size to signage and allowing for multiple freestanding signs (only one Pylon
ID) would not in any way be detrimental to the public health, safety of welfare or result in a change of
density or intensity that would be inconsistent with the provisions of the zoning code.
