Justification and Required Findings
1. The requested modification will be compatible with existing development in the neighborhood in
that the signage is not excessive and is presented in a professional manner. The design is consistent
with other Jaguar dealers in Southern California.
2. The modification is being pursued in order to allow signs in excess of 30% of the maximum allowed
sign area. While the proposed sign 1 is larger than code allows (75 SF) when the entire sign, including
the aluminum backer panel is counted, If the backer panel was considered a "sign fascia" the actual
sign copy proposed would total 59.09 SF which would meet the code (75 SF Max). The other wall
signs on the front elevation are Sign 4 (7.59 SF), Sign 5 (8.26 SF, Sign 6 (5.8 SF), Sign 7 (7.03 SF), and
Sign 8 (5.8 SF). All of the proposed wall signs total 93.57 (if the backer panel is not counted) If the
backer panel is counted, the total would be 154.02 SF. The total Building Frontage is 221'-6" X 1.5 =
332.25 total allowable signage on the primary elevation.
We are asking for more than one sign on this elevation where code only allows for one.
We feel that due to the size of the building this request is warranted and if approved, would allow for
adequate signage without creating a proliferation of signage.
The Secondary frontage facing Dove would be allowed 50% of the allowable primary frontage
(166.12SF) The proposed sign 2 is 119.54 counting the backer panel). Only one wall sign is proposed.

The architectural scale of the building supports the proposed signs in their size and design.
While the proposed Monument Signs (#10 a, #10b) is under the 8’ height limit (4'-0"”) and is under
the 75 SF allowed (62 SF), there are also two pedestrian oriented informational signs two vehicular
directional signs proposed. The Newport Beach Sign Code does not specifically address information
signs or vehicular directional signs (these are not “tenant” directional signs). Jaguar wants to keep a
cohesive look to the sign design package in concert with other dealerships in Southern California and
to promote a professional appearance. They are requesting a modification on these signs also.
3. The Zoning code intent is to allow for effective signage without creating a proliferation of signs.
Jaguar will be reducing the amount of signage but slightly increasing the size of some.
4. Jaguar feels that this package will maximize visibility and direction without overwhelming the
architectural integrity of the building. This modification provides a reasonable alternative without
proving detrimental to surrounding owners and occupants.
5. Allowing an increase in the number of signs on the front elevation and allowing for multiple
freestanding signs would not in any way be detrimental to the public health, safety of welfare or
result in a change of density or intensity that would be inconsistent with the provisions of the zoning
code.
