SUBJECT: Master Plan Amendment No . 20
Avocado Avenue
Procedure followed by the Planning •Commission .
Notice of public hearing was published in the Newport Harbor
Ensign on January 23 , 1969 and the Planning Commission con-
ducted a public hearing on this matter on February 6 , 1969 .
Background
In approving the freeway agreement on October 28 , 1968, the
City Council also approved the general alignments of the free-
ways and the arterial street system that formed an integral
part of those freeway alignments . The extension of Avocado
Avenue northerly of Coast Highway was indicated on the plans
as a new north-south linkage westerly of the Corona del Mar
Freeway. However, this proposed street has no official status
.on the Master Street and Highway Plan and therefore the Plan
should be amended to reflect the streets' function .
Findings of the Planning Commission .
The proposed extension of Avocado Avenue from Coast Highway to
San Joaquin Hills Road i-s recommended for inclusion on the Master
Street and Highway Plan as a primary street (four-lane divided
arterial ) . This extension of Avocado Avenue has been shown for
sometime on the various development and circulation plans of both
the Irvine Company and the City and on the freeway plans studied
and approved by the City Council . Its primary function will be
to serve as a connection between San Joaquin Hills Road , a major
street on the plan , the Newport Center area and the Corona del
Mar community. The street will border the proposed Civic Center
site currently under consideration and will afford secondary
access to Newport Center.
Recommendation of the Planning Commission

street will provide in the City ' s overall circulation system , the
