Subject: 4302 Ford Road Project
Mr. Zdeba,
Our family spent almost 10 years with our kids playing soccer at Bonita Canyon Sports Park field 5
(BCSP5). As a standalone field with no parking lot, we constantly ran out of parking and dealt with safety
issues during pick up and drop off of our kids for soccer practice. In a volunteer leadership role, I often
dealt with the parking and drop off issues-they were many. During weekend games, we were often
forced to park down the street at the baseball fields or way down by the current At&T building due to
lack of parking. The few soccer fields that we have are heavily used in this part of Newport.
The 4302 Ford Road Project poses additional safety concerns for the hundreds of kids that play at BCSP5
simply because of the significant increase in cars (and trucks when you consider deliveries, service, etc)
coming and going. While I’m generally supportive of development projects in our City, (I live across the
street from what would have been the “Museum House” and I supported it), this project, in between
two parks, on a very small street, (some of which has no sidewalk) seems to make no sense. Residents
driving home do not drive slowly and carefully the way people do going to the park.
In our neighborhood, Harbor Cove, we lived with the construction of the apartments at Jamboree and
San Joaquin and the speeding trucks were frightening on Jamboree while kids were heading to school at
CdMHS. I cannot fathom that kind of construction traffic next to two heavily used parks.
It is my hope that you and your team will give serious consideration to the concerns that residents, and
particularly parents, are expressing about the location of this project and it’s impact on our parks,
students, and athletes. This project looks beautiful but it’s location is very concerning. My reputation is
that of a respectful Newport Beach resident who is measured and logical in comments to the City....not
a naysayer or a “NIMBY”....anyone on our City Council can vouch for that. It is highly unusual for me to
object to a new development project.
Thank you for the important work you do for our City,
Ruth Sanchez Kobayashi
