PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THIS STATEMENT TO THE CITY COUNCIL AND STAFF, AND THE PUBLIC, AND ENTER INTO THE PUBLIC
RECORD.
Mayor and Council Members:
We understand that the City Council is planning to "support" the Newport Beach Schools/School Districts by
encouraging them NOT to take a stand as to protection of public health.
In principle, we appreciate the concept of parental choice, particularly as relates to minor and small children.
However, we are now in the throws of a broad -scale Pandemic, with COVID-19 and the more virulent and contagious
Delta variant which has in the past month given rise to a significant rise in infections and serious associated illness.
We made tremendous progress with vaccinations in the Spring, which was reflected in a reduction in the number of
COVID cases. We did not reach a level that would ensure broad -scale protection of people of all ages. It is of critical
importance that anyone that is eligible to be vaccinated ( over 12 yrs of age) be actively encouraged to do so.
In the interim, masks are the most meaningful protection for not only individual children, but our community at large.
Schools, and for that matter, any institution or organization, has a responsibility to do whatever it can to ENSURE THE
HEALTH AND WELFARE OF THE COMMUNITY IT SERVICES. —which in turn has direct impact on our COMMUNITY AT
LARGE.
We ask that the Council reconsider its position, and put unhelpful Ideologically based thinking aside, in favor of Socially
and Scientifically responsible action.lf we do not actively support this, the Pandemic will keep cycling with dire health
and potentially economic consequences.
Thank you for your consideration.
