Mayor and City Council,
My wife Sue and I hope you are having a great summer!
For over a year, we have worked with a committee of our neighbors to bring forward the project to
underground our utilities on the remainder of Balboa Island. Think of how much more beautiful the
Island would be without these poles and unsightly wires.
The project on the west end of the Island has been approved and surveyors have already started working.
Soon there will be no poles or wires From Agate to Collins Island. If our project fails to get a majority
support, our properties between Grand Canal and Agate will be sandwiched between the two
undergrounded areas. It will be a stark contrast between streets free of utility poles and streets with
unsightly wires and poles. It won't be long before we're able to compare property values, rents and
desirability with these improved areas.
We all appreciate your support of the Island and your willingness to make needed infrastructure
improvements. Eleven years ago, when the project would have cost about $17,000 per average lot, the
initiative fell a few votes short. So many people that failed to vote then still regret their mistake.
If the undergrounding project fails again, we will likely never underground this portion of Balboa Island.
It was our pleasure to work on this very important project.

Council Members,
There have been quite a few posts on Next Door regarding the dangers of undergrounding the
utilities on Balboa Island. I live in Bayside Village a short distance away and our utilities
have been underground since the community was built in 1959 / 1960. That I am aware of,
there has never been a water leakage or any other issue causing a power outage and I've lived
here for over 35 years.
With underground utilities, the community looks cleaner, there is less danger of power lines
being damaged by wind, fire, falling debris or other issues that may occur with above ground
ones.
Sincerely,
Pat Nangle
