TWERMS, the need for a highly (iterate citizenry is necessary as Newport Beach moves toward an
increasingly challenging future; and
TWEREAS, there are some residents of Newport Beach and some of those employed within the City
who are lacking the literacy skiffs necessary to meet these challenges; and
UWEREAS, lack of fiteracy skiffs impacts not only their fives and the fives of their famifes, but their
a6ifity to work productively, and their ful( participation as citizens, residents, and employees of our
City; and
TWEREAS, NewportlWesa BroLiteracy, a program of the Newport Beach Bu6fic Library, hos a
mission to develop the literacy skills of adults to empower them to achieve greater success in their fives —
at home, at work and in the community; and
TWEREAS, Newport/Mesa PYoLiteracy, a program of the Newport Beach Bu6(ic Library hosts an
annuaflnternationa/Literacy Day event to highlight the importance of literacy in society and the great
strides that program participants have made.
NOW,, WEREEORE, I, Brad Avery, Mayor of the City of Newport Beach, do here6y proclaim
September 8, 2021, as

in the City of Newport Beach and urge my felfow citizens to (earn more about the importance of fiteracy
and to become involved with literacy in the community.
