NEWPORT BEACH FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD
FIRE PREVENTION SPECIFICATIONS
STANDARD #F-1
Description: Signs on Fire Department Connections.
Authority
Fire Code Section: NFPA 13, NIPA 14
C.A.C. Title 19
U.F.C.10.105.(b)
General
Proper identification of Fire Department Connections (F.D.C's) is essential for successful tire
fighting operations in buildings with built-in fire protection. In order to simplify department
operations, it is important for signs on F.D.C's to clearly indicate the location of the system
being served, the type of system and the proper pump pressure needed if necessary.
Requirements for Identification Signs at Fire Department Connections.
A. Signs shall be constructed of a durable material, preferably metal.
B. Signs shall be a minimum of four inches high by eight inches wide.
C. Lettering on the sign shall be at least one inch in height on a clearly contrasting
background.
D. Signs are to be permanently mounted on the building adjacent to, or directly on
the F.D.C. and must be visible from the adjacent roadway.
E. In addition to other requirements in this specification, all signs must state the
address of the building being served.
7
For systems in which the riser serves both the standpipe and sprinkler systems and supply is
provided by an on -site fire pump calculated to supply both the sprinkler and standpipe demand.
(Consult with Fire Prevention for assistance.)
Sprinkler System &
Standpipes
Pump $ PSI
4675 MacArthur Court
* To determine the pump pressure stated on the sign; 1) Determine the operational pressure
of the on -site fire pump, 2) Adjust for the difference in elevation between the F.D.C. and the fire
pump at.434 psi/ft., 3) Add 25 psi for system friction loss.
Example:
1. Pressure stated on the test plate on the on -site pump = 180 psi.
2. If the pump is below the F.D.C., subtract .434 pounds per foot of
difference. 180.
10' x .434 = 4.34 psi - 4.5
3. Add 25 psi for friction loss in the F.D.C. + 25.
Total amount to be stated on sign: 200 psi

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The Globe GL Series Sprinkler is a low profile yet durable design
which utilizes a frangible glass ampule as the thermosensitive
element. While the sprinkler provides an aesthetically pleasing
appearance, it can be installed wherever standard spray sprinklers
are specified. This sprinkler series is available in various styles,
orifices, temperature ratings and finishes to meet varying design
requirements.
The heart of Globe's GL Series sprinkler proven actuating
assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that contains
a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed, the
liquid within the bulb expands increasing the internal pressure. At
the prescribed temperature the internal pressure within the ampule
exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass to shatter. This
results in water discharge which is distributed in an approved
pattern depending upon the deflector style used.

Threaded Fittings
Ductile Iron - 800 Series
ANSI 616.3
Manufactured by: Central Grooved Piping Products, Inc. a subsidiary of
Central Sprinkler Company
451 North Cannon Avenue, Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446
111
Product
Description
Central Ductile Iron threaded fittings
conform to ANSI B16.3 and are
higher in strength and more corrosion
resistant than cast iron fittings. The
additional strength is provided by the
ductile properties making up the
fitting. This is accomplished by
adding magnesium while the iron is
being poured into its final cast shape.
This provides an advantage as the
fittings are not as susceptible to
leaks or cracking and they are also
lighter than standard cast iron.
Caution: Installers who have not
used ductile Iron threaded fittings
before should be instructed that
the fitting is stronger than the pipe
and over -tightening the fitting can
create leaks and cause damage to
pipe threads. In general, there Is
about one-half a turn difference
between cast iron and ductile Iron
fittings. Apply Teflon tape or high
quality pipe joint compound on the
pipe threads and tighten two to
three turns beyond hand tight. If
you are using an automatic make -
on machine, please exercise
caution In setting your machine to
the proper parameters prior to
tightening fittings onto the male
pipe threads.

. Dyna-Thread®
Full. Line Sch-40. Replacement
Dyne -Thread' offers the life expectancy of Sch-40 with superior hydraulics and greater value.
Dyna-Tluead sprinkler pipe represents an engineering advancement for the sprinkler pipe industry. It combines the safety
and longevity of traditional Sch-40 pipe with quality and superior hydraulic advantages.
Comparison to Schedule 4.^-
• Dyna-Thread's inside diameter is up
to 3.6% larger than Sch-40 giving it
superior hydraulics. And, when used
in combination with Dyna-Flow pipe,
down sizing often occurs.
• Dyna-Thread is fully listed and
approved by UL, ULC, and FM for
fire sprinkler applications.
• The life expectancy of Dyna-Thread
and Sch-40 are equal based on the
calculated wall thicknesses per UL.
• The consistent quality of steel used to
make Dyne -Thread facilitates smooth
threading and lower maintenance
costs.
• The exterior of Dyna-Thread is
protected by a clean, durable mill
coating for extended shelf life and
easy paint application.
• With its increased strength and lighter
weight, Dyna-Thread reduces
:hstallation fatigue and is ideal for
retro-fit applications.
Corrosion Resistance Ratio (CRR) is a
UL (Underwriters Laboratory) term for
the estimated life expectancy of a pipe
joint This is based on the calculated
wall thickness at the base of the first
exposed thread, assumed to be the
weakest point of the pipe length. Dyna-
Thread and Sch-40 have the same
calculated wall thicknesses at this point
and are both assigned the same CRR of
1.00.
The internal surface of all black Allied
Tube & Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe
products up to 4.5000" in diameter is
coated with our new Antibacterial
Formula, ABF". In scientific laboratory
test, ABS proved to have superior
resistance to microbial colonization of
pipe walls, thereby delaying or possibly
preventing the onset of
Micmbiologicaily Influenced corrosion
(MIC) when the First Sprinkler System
is first installed.

Comparison to L.W.T. Pipes
• More wall thickness it the thread
(CRR=1.00) gives Dyna-Thread
better life expectancy than lightwall
threadable pipe joints.
• Unlike ligbtwall threadable pipe,
Dyna-Thread has no thread gauge
warning.
• Dyna-Thread is approved for
standard hanger spacing (15 ft.
O.C.), can be used as earthquake
sway bracing, and is safe to use as
drops.
• Dyna-Thread is safer to weld on.
• • Dyna-Thread is more widely
accepted than lightwall threadable
where Sch-40 is specified

system.
Superior Hydraulics
With an inside diameter of up to 11%
larger than Schedulo-40 and up to 7•%
larger than Schedule-10, Dyna-Flow
pipe hydraulics are exceptional. Larger
LD.s enable Dyna-Flow, and related
components, to be down -sized within the
system, thus increasing the potential for
job cost savings. For complete Hazen -
Williams charts, refer to "Dyna-Flow
Hydraulic Data Tables."
Coatings & Fabrication
Dyna-Flow products are coated with
an environmentally approved and
specially formulated modified -acrylic or
water -based coating. This durable coating
is paintable. The black coating acts as
an excellent primer and is resistant to
weathering and U.V. degradation from
outdoor storage.
Metallurgical properties provide excellent
fabrication characteristics for end prep
finishes, welding and roll grooving.
There is no special process or equipment
needed for fabrication and installation.
The internal surface of all black Allied
Tube & Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe
products up to 4.5000" in diameter is
coated with our new Antibacterial
Formula, "ABF". In scientific laboratory
test, ABS proved to have superior
resistance to microbial colonization of
pipe walls, thereby delaying or possibly
preventing the onset of Microbiologically
Influenced corrosion (MIC) when the
First Sprinkler System is first installed
