Dear Mayor Avery and Newport Beach City Council members, Please take into consideration when you vote on someone for Mayor our personal freedom. With the new mask mandate coming and the new covid variant we now more than ever need to protect our freedoms as well as advocating for safety for our community. Closing the beaches and boardwalks and trails is NOT the way to do that. Taking away our public resources and access to public land is and was ludicrous. People can safely social distance people can wear masks people can make their own decisions for their families. Myself and my family strongly support anyone who has NOT voted to take away our access to these valuable public assets in a time when they are so greatly needed for many. Dear City clerk and City Council, Hope this email finds you well. I have been a small business owner in this beautiful town who has been contributing to this city in many ways, as well as paying my financial dues in order to support my city. I am among many small businesses that suffered during all the unjust closures for over a year while I still had to pay my business and home rents and put food on the table as a single mother. My heart goes out to all the people of this world who became the victims of those in power, media and social media who have been fearmongering and dividing us. While government elites live in their ivory towers and dine maskless in their private parties and eat at their favorite restaurants without social distancing and mask. We, The people are paying their salaries and luxurious life styles. We, The people have the right to choose the right people who would have OUR interest at heart instead of being supporting the corruptions and contributing towards all the lies and oppressions. I am not at all political, but based on my direct observations, most blue states, such as California are the ones suffering the most. I am sure you see this too. The only Mayor who has truly fought for our rights and kept sanity and safety for our city was Will O'Neil. We can not let someone like Joy Brenner who has proven to be deeply in bed with the oppressive government to be our mayor. She almost destroyed this town with her oppressive ideology. WE THE PEOPLE need WILL O'Neil as our Mayor again. Will O'Neil is a man of integrity, honesty and someone who truly loves our people and this city. WE THE PEOPLE are watching every single step of this election and will NOT tolerate corruption any longer. Thank you for caring and doing the right thing for all of us! It was sent to the city clerk as well as to the city council. Hopefully council members have seen it. I've copied it below. Dear Honorable Council Members, Let me start by saying that I have confidence that Council knows what is best for the city and each individual Council member will do what they feel is in the best interests of the city. You are the most informed in the city and this important decision belongs with your capable leadership. About two years ago I became interested in city government after learning that a local issue was best resolved by the City Council. It started with inquiring whether anything could be done with massive amounts of local construction on Newport Island. The noise, traffic congestion and parking problems were becoming unbearable. I soon learned that was unsolvable but also learned that the growth in Short Term Rentals was exasperating the problem. I knew that, left unchecked, the island would no longer be the safe, quiet, and peaceful community it once was. Construction issues would come and go but STR problems would increase. After reaching out to City Staff, I contacted Diane Dixon who is the Council Member for Newport Island and Mayor at that time. She helped to direct me to what would be needed to facilitate change. That expanded to addressing the City Council as well as the Planning Commission and City Staff. What I soon learned was that City Staff is capable, sympathetic, and helpful. Knowing that working with City Council was imperative, I increased my participation by attending City Council meetings and communicating with City Council Members. We received solid support from our district representative, Diane Dixon. We would not have received the needed relief without Mayor Avery, Council Members, Dixon, 'Duffy' Duffield and Brenner all of whom supported the concerns of the residents. Although she was not our district representative, Council Member Joy Brenner went the extra mile to inform, educate and support Newport Island resident's efforts to address our growing STIR issues. Sure, I was a bit naive. Naturally I perceived the function of the Council was to represent the best interests of most residents in the city. No government touches residents quicker and closer than city government. As I observed that city government also represented city business concerns, I understood a balance was needed but I still believed that representing residents should be the primary function of city government. The actions of Joy Brenner have resonated with me that she shares the same beliefs regarding protecting the rights of citizens. Perhaps more importantly, after observing her service for the city, she truly has the best interests of the city in her vision. She listens to all sides, is respectful to everyone, has an open mind, asks pointed questions, does her homework, and casts her votes as an independent. In the years of watching the 1 Council in action, I know of no controversy surrounding her and her character and integrity are without reproach. I have learned about the rotating process of electing the mayor and how Mayor Pro -Tem typically is next in line. It is a good process, especially if time served on the council is taken into consideration. It seems to me that a certain skill set is needed and much of that skill set is 'on the job' training. I do think the Mayor Brad Avery has done a great job and personally I would give him another year, but I understand the process. I strongly advocate for Joy Brenner to serve as Mayor Pro -Tem. She checks all the boxes and a vote for her is in the best interests of the residents in Newport Beach. It is also the right thing to do. There should be no one considered who has supported ideas that are based on fear instead of logic (for example, closing beaches last year). With this latest mask mandate announced by the governor, our Newport Beach mayor should be a leader who supports our state and federal constitutional rights to freedom. Mask mandates, social distancing, and other ridiculous protocols do not provide health nor safety. Has Mr. Blom demonstrated the above attributes ? r Common sense ? No. Mr. Blom has admitted that he has secretly consumed wine during City Council meetings on various occasions. Now that this was discovered, Mr. Blom says he won't do it anymore. That's good, but Mr. Blom should not be rewarded because he stopped doing what he never should have done to begin with. A friend of mine who works for the City says if he were found to be drinking on the job, he would be axed forthwith. From the Daily Pilot on 12/2/21:_"In an interview with the Daily Pilot Wednesday, Blom said he has read the city code and didn't see anything explicit about decorum." Does Mr. Blom really need to consult a rule book to figure out it's not Ok to drink on the dais during a City Council meeting ? Conclusion: No common sense. Good judgement ? No. My understanding from several people is that while the pandemic was raging, Mr. Blom discouraged masking up in his restaurant by customers and employees. Let me say that I have not been to Mr. Blom's restaurant and did not personally witness this, but you can ask Mr. Blom directly. If true, that would certainly be poor judgement and contrary to public safety Transparency ? No. there is no evidence that Mr. Blom communicated his drinking on the dais to any of his fellow council members or asked approval from any of them or from the City Attorney Respect ? No. In my opinion, Mr. Blom's actions demonstrate lack of respect for the City Council and the citizens of Newport Beach. In the 12/2/21 article in the Daily Pilot, Mr. Blom is quoted as saying: "...I think that I am in a very different position of a lot of people that I'm from a different fabric and from a different cloth.". That statement scares me .... I can't tell if Mr. Blom sees him as a rebel or on a superior level, or is determined to go against the grain. I want to be proud of our City Council. Being elected Mayor Pro Tem is an honor What I have seen and heard from Mr. Blom does not demonstrate respect, and does not deserve the honor of Mayor Pro Tem Leadership ? No. Leadership by example is a common measure. Mr. Blom's actions have been a poor example. Mr. Blom has along way to go to earn respect. Experience ? No. Mr. Blom has the least experience of any of the council members It is my understanding that several of you are aspiring to higher office in the not too distant future. Do you really want your legacy as a Newport Beach City Council member who that you voted for Noah Blom as Mayor Pro Tem with a failing grade in the above attributes ? I think not ! A Father's Eyes See No Wrong Mr. John Blom claims his son `thinks out of the box'. But if that is an excuse for his son'spoor behavior then we have a big problem. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If a father will not hold his son accountable then why would his son accept responsibility for his poor choices`? Unfortunately, Noah Blom chose to drink on the dais at a City Council meeting. He made that decision all on his own. He is mature enough to know what is expected of him. And he still made a poor choice. I'm all for new ideas and innovative ways to solve problems but Noah Blom's behavior does not convince me he is capable of that. For every minute we have wasted on Noah Blom's poor choices the Council could have spent on useful and meaningful issues. That is a form of theft. Time is valuable. Instead of contributing he has taken valuable time from all of us. In a father's eves a son can do no wrong. Well he did and he will be held accountable. Hello Council Members, I moved to CDM a couple of years ago and have had family living here for a decade. It's a spectacular place with everything from natural beauty to economic advantages that much of California does not enjoy. It's important to me that we stay cognizant of this and take great care to preserve our area without falling prey to political devision rather than making the best decisions for our residents and city. I have seen council members pack the chamber with friends, disregard both sides of possibility, and treat agenda items like a campaign. Your job is to represent everyone - not take personally motivated items before the council and inaccurately portray an uprise in community response. (Watch the council meeting where Noah brought the school board mask item to Council - that never should have happened and I lost a lot of faith and trust in our leadership that night. I might agree with you on topic but that was not your issue and it was a blatant set up representing only one side of something outside of your domain.) I have found that Joy Brenner is the least political person on this council and therefore believe she would make the best Mayor. When elected, Joy put party aside and viewed each item from the standpoint of what is best for Newport Beach. She also reads and responds to all emails sent in by residents, attends tons of events and functions, and really considers what the concerns are of everyone who lives here. She would make a wonderfully fair and considerate mayor. We need a leader who is in this for the benefit of everyone. Wanting to understand city governance I began attending city council meetings and had the good fortune to observe and listen to an articulate and well informed citizen; Joy Brenner. After hearing her address the council very convincingly on one occasion I approached her after the meeting and asked "just who are you?" Fortunately, Joy is as gracious as she is smart and kindly answered my question with a brief resume! Her indepth knowledge coupled with a sincere respect for our community is a powerful combination. When years later she ran for office and I had the opportunity to encourage voters it was easy to do so because so many recognized her name from decades of service!! In knocking on hundreds of doors to promote her election, I consistently heard stories from voters commending her consensus building and clear communication. Her tireless work improving our parks, beaches, schools and library were the perfect springboard to tackling even more of our local issues which she has commendably done since her election as our city councilwoman. It appears JH and his small group of supporters are on a witch-hunt to oust Noah. Every friend/neighbor I've spoken with re Herdman's behavior is also appalled & disgusted by it. ....And, for the record, it does not bother me in the least Noah was sipping on some wine during the City Council meeting. I've known Noah Blom as a family friend since we were kids and I continue to know him well to this day. Of all the people I've met and known over the years locally, Noah has proven to be the most passionate advocate for the betterment of the City of Newport Beach. Whenever he and I sit down and talk, he is always bringing up ideas that he has that can somehow improve our community over time. For how incredible this city has been and has become over the years, we always need visionaries to keep us heading in the right direction and growing with the times. Noah's leadership in the role of Mayor Pro -Tem would be a great move for the future of the city. He is a family oriented guy with a knack for business and innovation and has always been very proactive in his creative views and problem solving abilities. How could Noah Blom even be considered for Mayor ProTem? I have traveled to many countries around the world and everyone you meet knows Newport Beach, California in the most positive way. Newport Beach has achieved worldwide status, business and life style and is the envy of many cities, with its nonsense approach to government, which is rarely seen today. I'm dumbfounded as to how the this movement for Noah could have even started , let alone how he ever became elected? The councle has always been "Ladies and Gentlemen". My friends and neighbors in Newport Beach where I have lived for over 40 years watch/attend the city councle meetings and are very dissappointed that he is even on the city councle let alone being concidered for Mayor ProTem!!!!!!! Let's look at his statements! "I've said oftentimes I'm not a politician. I will say that again. I am my own person. I vote my own heart, and I do so based on what I think is best and right for the city," Blom said Tuesday night. "In doing that, I think that I am also in a very different position of a lot of people that I'm from a different fabric and from a different cloth." You can be "from a different fabric", however you still must discharge your duties with respect. Drinking alcohol, while conducting council business and use of locker room language from the dais is not Newport Beach's persona and indicates immunity. You are correct, that you are "not a politician", as politicians do vote with their "heart", but their heart knows the boundaries of acceptable behavior and respect the voters. Being on the council should not be treated like a poker card game! Joy Brenner follows a set of principles, as well as her heart and may be one of the most prepared members on Council. Why put someone in that position who by his own admission is not interested in the role. He has just been put on the council. We need someone with more experience. Dear Mayor Avery and City Council, Unfortunately, self-serving political times are becoming the norm and not the exception. Elected officials have forgotten who elected them, why they are elected in the first place (to govern fairly without bias) and that they should honor the dignity of their office. History is a great teacher. Until recently, the City of Newport Beach and their City Council, was one of the few cities that had not fallen prey to self-serving council persons; however, there is a movement with some members on council to bring Newport Beach down to the same level of disgust that many other misguided cities find themselves in. When the number one news radio station in Southern California, KNX, did a lead story about Newport Beach City, it was not expounding on its many exceptional qualities, but the story was calling attention to the fact that Councilmembers gave tacit approval to an elected Council member (Blom) consuming alcohol on the Dias during a Council meeting, and the astonishing fact that it was overlooked. Very disturbing. However, even more alarming is that council person Will O'Neill, is spearheading a movement to have this immature (both in politics and on a personal level) councilperson be elected Mayor ProTem because he's "angry" at Councilwoman Brenner. Self-serving elected officials, with clandestine agendas have no place in Newport Beach. if this is what O'Neill and Blom want to inflict on Newport Beach, they should pack their bags and move to a city where they can be true carpetbaggers. Or they could take the high road, learn from their error in judgment and support the principled Joy Brenner for Mayor Pro Tem and attempt to regain your political footing. Hi All, I hope this email finds you well. I felt compelled to write you all a quick email with my support for Noah Blom. I am not the kind of person to take any endorsement lightly and never give reviews on anything that I have taken part in so this will be a first. The reason I felt compelled to write you is because I truly feel passionate about my support of Noah. It is refreshing to have someone that represents small businesses and parental rights in an honest and transparent manner. Never have we had so many challenges to keep local businesses open and thriving and, in my job, I see the affects that local municipalities can have on these small retailers. Having someone in this role that understands what small businesses deal with day in and day out is critical for our local success. These retailers are the lifeblood of our local markets (not to mention tax dollars) and having someone who gets it means a lot to our industry. We need more people that live/breathe positivity and entrepreneurialism and Noah's life story is a direct reflection of the culture we need to continue to breed in this town. Thank you for this opportunity to express some concerns and an expectation: In your selection process of Mayor and Mayor Pro -Tem, please consider that - like it or not - these positions represent our community and are role models to our residents and their children. Newport Beach already has a reputation of being a very "alcohol -friendly" community; we don't need to enhance it. When raising kids, "More is caught than taught." We may profess responsible and judicious alcohol consumption to our community and our children, but we need to demonstrate it as well. Elected officials are expected to act in our public interest with the greatest integrity and best decision-making abilities. Thank you for your time and consideration. As a Corona Del Mar resident, I find it an affront to a very important part of Newport that our council person has NOT been Mayor or Pro Temp in a very very long time. I don't think this part of the city should be ignored.... There are a lot of us that are active and know what is going on in the community and in the City. We have THE most active civic organization in Newport in the CDM Residents Association. And we have an experienced active involved Council person in Joy Brenner. PLEASE stop all these petty political deals and do what is right... bring a Mayor or Mayor Pro -Temp back to Corona Del Mar...... and elect Joy Brenner to the seat to represent us please.... AND I would strongly suggest that all of you considering voting for Noah Bloom for anything reconsider your civic duties. He is NOT experienced.... He has no mature judgement.... He has proven that he is willing to flaunt stupid things in the face of the responsibilities to the city. You think it is right for a council person to drink doing the cities business? You think that demonstrates any judgement other than BAD judgement? If he did a similar things for any business he would already be reprimanded ..... PLEASE do not vote for Mr. Bloom for any new position.... Many of us are watching and if you vote for an inexperienced person over the right candidates... we will remember in the next election... YOU are also involved and want you to show mature leadership and not political dealing... Please do what is right... and what is correct for the city Best, Glenn Highland Corona Del Mar..... 13 Received After Agenda Printed December 14, 2021 Item Nos. 13 & 14 Mulvey, Jennifer From: Rieff, Kim Sent: December 13, 202110:52 AM To: Mulvey, Jennifer Subject: FW: Mr. Blom's drinking habits From: Susan Skinner <susanskinner949@gmail.com> Sent: December 12, 20219:00 PM To: Dept - City Council <CityCouncil@newportbeachca.gov> Subject: Mr. Blom's drinking habits [EXTERNAL EMAIL] DO NOT CLICK links or attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Dear City Council, I would like to address the selection of Mayor and mayor pro tem. As a Newport Beach resident and an older couple who are retired it is imperative to us that we place someone in the mayor position who has demonstrated that they will vote for freedom. We need to put forth someone who for the next two years will be committed to keeping our vital public assets open and operating and accessible to all of us. This would include our beaches and our boardwalks and hiking trails. We need to support our local businesses and help keep our communities thriving. With the pandemic staying in the forefront this is vital. For this reason please do not consider anyone who has voted to close our beaches and boardwalks. Thank you. I have been bullied mercilessly on our local next door account because of my position. It's ridiculous and we all have a right to be heard. Thank you for your time and commitment to serving our city. Please vote for the most worthy candidate. Thank you. George M. Hello NB city council & city clerk— As a Newport Beach resident, I urge you to vote for Will O'Neil tomorrow. He is the best fit to represent our city'a needs. Please do not vote for Joy, she does not have Newport's best interest in mind with the way she votes. Thank you for your consideration! Blessings, Leslie Ryan Leslie B. Dear Council Members of Newport Beach, The council member representing the 6th Council District in the City of Newport Beach (Corona del Mar) has not been selected mayor since 2012. I am writing to encourage your vote/selection for Joy Brenner, 6th District Council Member, for Mayor of Newport Beach. Joy has done an excellent job representing her district and all of the citizens of Newport Beach for the past 3 years. She deserves to be recognized for the good work that she has done and the many things she has accomplished. Joy Brenner would be a mayor that all of the citizens of Newport Beach could be proud of. It has been quite some time since the council member of the 611 District (Corona del Mar) has been selected mayor, and Joy Brenner is more than capable of filling that position. Regards, Michael Pilsitz Corona Highlands Representative, Corona del Mar Residents Association Board Mulvey, Jennifer From: Rieff, Kim Sent: December 15, 20217:08 AM To: Mulvey, Jennifer Subject: FW: Public Comments: Mayor Selection -----Original Message ----- From: Margaret Stewart <peggystewart@me.com> Sent: December 13, 20214:56 PM To: Dept - City Council <CityCouncil@newportbeachca.gov> Subject: Public Comments: Mayor Selection [EXTERNAL EMAIL] DO NOT CLICK links or attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. Please do NOT make Noah Blom Mayor Pro -Tem. He has demonstrated at Council meetings that he is uncouth, disrespectful of the Newport Beach citizens, has poorjudgement in his conduct and would be an embarrassment to our community. He talks endlessly and somewhat incoherently about "back door politics" yet if he is voted in he will be the perfect representation of back door politics. It will be hard to respect any council member who votes to elevate him to this esteemed position.
