F -3(b) FROM: Public Works Department - Traffic Division SUBJECT: BUS SHELTER PROGRAM C' - 2p _3 RECOMMENDATION• Authorize the Mayor and City Clerk to execute an agreement with Bustop Shelters of California, Inc. to provide bus shelters and benches at various locations throughout the City. DISCUSSION• The City of Newport Beach has had a program for the installation and maintenance of bus shelters with advertising since 1985. The current contract expires May 19, 1991. The original contractor has sold his shelters to another company, Bustop Shelters of California, Inc., which would like to have the contract rewritten at this time. The existing program consists of 18 shelters with advertising, 2 shelters without advertising, and approximately 20 bus benches. The revenue to the City is based upon the number of shelters and is currently just over $26,000 annually. Bustop Shelters has submitted a proposal to continue the existing program that includes significant additional revenues and benefits to the City. The highlights of the proposal include: 1 of 2 i * A one -time renewal bonus of $100,000. * An immediate increase in the monthly fee of 23 %, with • annual increases over the five -year period of the agreement. * An installation fee of $5000 for each new shelter with advertising. * Three additional shelters without advertising for use at locations selected by the City. Bustop Shelters has been providing the shelter services to the City for almost two years since they purchased the assets of the original shelter contractor. Based upon observations of other shelter programs in Orange County, staff believes that Bustop Shelters provides above - average service. They have kept the shelters clean and trash -free and have responded quickly to requests for maintenance due to vandalism or accidents. It is recommended that a new, five -year agreement be signed with Bustop Shelters of California, Inc. • Richard M. Edmonston Traffic Engineer RME:bb WP:A:CCOCT22.MEM 2 of 2
