Staff was recently notified that a Newport Beach resident, Dorothy Arens Ressel, left a 3% share of her estate to be divided equally between three City of Newport Beach (City) departments: the Fire Department, the Police Department, and the Newport Beach Public Library. As the affairs of the estate are concluded, the City will receive multiple distributions of assets from the trust that was set up for this purpose. Staff recently received the first distributions of $19,281.50 each for the three named departments and anticipates that additional distributions will be made in the future. The total amount of the donations is estimated to be approximately $120,000, or $40,000 for each department. The donated funds are restricted for the use of these departments, but otherwise may be utilized for any governmental purpose. 13-1 Acceptance of Donations for the Police, Fire and Library Departments from the Dorothy Arens Ressel Trust March 22, 2022 Page 2 FISCAL IMPACT: As a result of these donations, the Police, Fire, and Library Departments will each receive approximately $40,000 to be utilized for any governmental purpose.
