I AM A MEMBER OF THE AIRPORT SITE COALITION AND ATTENDED E"
Bum
MEETING FOR THE PAST TWENTY MONTHS. I WAS SHOCKED TO READ JEFFREY
PERLMAN'S ARTICLE IN THIS MORNING'S ORANGE COUNTY SECTION "NORTON AFB
EMERGES AS TOP AIRPORT SITE". PERHAPS NOT MORE THAN TEN PERCENT OF THOSE
PRESENT SUGGESTED THAT NORTON BE KEPT ON THE LIST OF SITES STILL UNDER
CONSIDERATION.
THE FACTS ARE THAT NORTON WOULD CREATE STILL MORE CONGESTED AIRSPACE,
THEIR AIR TRAFFIC INTERFEREING IN AIRLINER APPROACH PATTERN TO LAX, L.A.
NORTON IS NOT CENTRALLY LOCATED; HAS NO RAIL OR FREEWAY ACCESS; AND HAS
NO PROTECTED BUFFER ZONE. WITHIN FIVE YEARS, IT WOULD BE SURROUNDED BY
RESIDENTIAL HOUSING AND HIGH RISE BUILDINGS --AND PLAGUED BY "NOISE
POLLUTION" LAWSUITS IN THE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS ---JUST LIKE THOSE AT LAX
AND THE JOHN WAYNE AIRPORTS. ALL THESE COSTS ARE PLACED ON THE TAXPAYER
WHO IS ALREADY TIRED OF THESE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN!
A SHORESIDE OCEAN SITE HAS BEEN SUGGESTED ADJACENT TO THE LAS PULGAS
OFFRAMP AT CAMP PENDLETON. ACCESS IS NEEDED FROM THE MARINE CORPS TO THIS
3000 ACRE SHORESIDE SITE THAT WOULD BE BUILT ON TIDELANDS OWNED AND
CONTROLLED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. SITUATED HALFWAY BETWEEN OCEANSIDE
AND SAN CLEMENTE, THIS SITE PROVIDES A TEN MILE BUFFER ZONE TO THE NORTH,
EAST AND SOUTH, WITH THE OCEAN ON THE WEST. CAMP PENDLETON PROTECTS THE
SITE FROM ANY COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OR RESIDENTIAL HOUSING. WITH` RAIL
AND RREEWAY ACCESS ALREADY IN PLACE AND CENTRALLY LOCATED TO SERVE SAN
DIEGO, ORANGE, RIVERSIDE AND IMPERIAL COUNTIES, IT WOULD PROVIDE THE
ACCOMMODATIONS NEEDED FOR AN ESTIMATED 38,000,000 PASSENGERS IN THE YEAR
2010. WITH ALL LANDINGS AND TAKEOFFS OVER THE OCEAN, AND ALL JET FUEL
DELIVERIES BY TANKERS, IT BIDS TO BE THE SAFEST, MOST CONVENEIENT AND
LEAST EXPENSIVE OF ALL THE SITES SUGGESTED.
THIS SITE COULD ALSO ASSUME A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE "OVERLOAD"
NOW BEING FORCED ON THE JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT. THIS WOULD AFFORD A MAJOR
RELIEF TO THE RESIDENTS OF BALBOA AND NEWPORT BEACH WHO ARE NOW SUFFERING
GREAT PAIN AND STRESS FROM THE JET NOISE AND FEAR OF CRASHES INTO THEIR
RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS.
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE GENERAL POPULATION IN THE FOUR SOUTHERN
COUNTIES REBELL AGAINST POLITICAL DECISIONS AND ASK THE MARINE CORPS TO
GRACIOUSLY GRANT ACCESS TO THE LAS PULGAS SITE. THE NEEDS OF 38,000,000
AMERICAN RESIDENTS FOR A SAFE AND CONVENEIENT AIRPORT SHOULD NOT BE DENIED!
