Product Data Sheet 9ka^ MB June 2019, Version 01.04 020512081000000017 2/4 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS SUBSTRATE PREPARATION • Substrate must be clean, dry, sound and homogeneous, free from oils, grease, dust, and loose or friable particles. Paint, laitance, and other poorly adhering contents must be mechanically removed. • Substrate must have an open textured surface to allow Sika® MB to penetrate. (i.e. Blast cleaning, grinding are considered acceptable means to achevie the desired surface profile. Acid and chemical etching are not acceptable). • At least 50 % of the surface area must be cleared of residual adhesive and cutbacks. (i.e. by grinding or mechanical substrate preparation) • Old cutback can contain asbestos which is dangerous for the health so do not grind, sand or blast. Refer to the Resilient Floor Covering Institute's publication "recommended work practice for removal of resilient floor coverings" for instruction. • Minimum substrate compressive strength > 1,160 psi. Tensile Bond strength > 116 psi at the time Sika® MB is applied. • Repair with Sika' Level SkimCoat or SikaQuick' mortar before priming. • The floor must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum prior to installation of the Sika® MB. • On fiber reinforced concrete, fibers should be flamed off the surface prior to application of Sika® MB as a moisture barrier. • Before overall installation begins, Sika' recommends the application of several small test patches to determine primer application requirements and acceptability of final product performance. MIXING • Add one full can of component A to one full can of component B then mix with an electric drill and mixing (Jiffy Mixer type) paddle at a low speed to reduce air entrainment (300-400 rpm). Using a paint stick or similar is not sufficient to mix the primer. • A minimum mixing time of 3 minutes shall be observed; mixing shall continue until a homogeneous mix has been achieved. • Scrape sides of pail with paint stick or paddle to ensure all contents are thoroughly mixed together. • Unmixed material applied to the floor will not cure properly. APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS • Apply Sika® MB uniformly (in 2 directions 90') to the substrate using a medium nap roller, ensuring that a continuous coat is achieved over the entire surface (MUST produce a mirror like finish). • Pour contents of pail onto the floor for best working time. Attempting to work from the pail will reduce working time. • When used as a moisture barrier and substrate consolidation / adhesion promotor, prepare the Product Data Sheer Sika- MB June 2019, Version 01.04 020S12081000000017 substrate mechanically as in accordance with the guidelines stated in subtitle "Surface Preparation". Apply the first coat at 30 mils Apply the second coat at 15 mils in accordance with the open time*. 2 coats application: Apply the first coat at 75-115 ftz/gal Apply the second coat at 150-225 ft1/gal in accordance with the application time window*. Then follow one of the option: • Option 1: Broadcast to refusal with oven dried silica sand (20/30) on the second coat immediately. Sweep sand once the epoxy is cured. Apply Sika® Level products on cured epoxy. • Option 2: Apply Sika® Level-02 EZ Primer in accordance with the application time window*. When the primer is dry, apply Sika® Level products. 'ref. to appliction time in sections above CLEANING OF TOOLS Clean all tools and application equipment with cleaning solvent (Xylene, MEK are effective). Hardened/cured material can only be removed mechanically. LIMITATIONS • Proper coverage must be used to achieve moisture barrier properties. • Will not act as a moisture barrier for gypsum screeds. Gypsum based subfloors are very susceptible to excess moisture and will be degraded if exposed to excess moisture from below or above. • Only protects from moisture coming from below the concrete. • Will not prevent hydrostatic pressure. • Must not be applied to a visibly wet substrate. • Does not prevent moisture occurring between the epoxy and the floating floor due to secondary sources of moisture or acclimation, e.g. water condensation. • Is not suitable for use with bonded systems due to possible curing and adhesion problems. • Sika* recommends the use of Sika' Level products on top of it. • Floor covering manufacturer's and Wood flooring manufacturer's recommendations, like room humidity levels and wood acclimation requirements should be strictly followed. • Sika' does not make any standing recommendations as to the structural integrity of old adhesive residues or subflooring materials that are not manufactured by Sika'. • When left on the substrate for more than the maximum allowable open time of 36 hours, prior to placing the adhesive, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and mechanically prepared (i.e. screened sand) and solvent wiped. Failure to do this, may result in adhesion problems. For detailed instruction contact our Technical Service. When used in conjunction with SikaBond', Sika® MB does not need to be broadcasted with sand. !r BUILDING 3/4 BASIS OF PRODUCT DATA LEGAL DISCLAIMER Results may differ based upon statistical variations • KEEP CONTAINER TIGHTLY CLOSED depending upon mixing methods and equipment, a KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN temperature, application methods, test methods, actual • NOT FOR INTERNAL CONSUMPTION site conditions and curing conditions. a FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY • FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY OTHER RESTRICTIONS See Legal Disclaimer. E Typical Construction Details - Flintlastic® SA 2-Ply System Wood Parapet Wall Detail Scupper Detail Concrete Wall Termination with Surface Mount Flashing Edge Detail with Insulation Typical Construction Details - Flintlastic® SA 2-Ply System Vent Pipe Collar Detail Inside Corner Drain Detail Outside Corner Construction Details Included in this manual are a few common construction details. Please refer to CertalnTeed's standard details or the NRCA for details not found within this manual. Important to note with all details, all metal must be primed and set in FIIntBond• trowel grade adhesive and all overlaps over mineral surfacing must utilize FlintBond trowel grade adhesive. The Proper T-Seam Detail Before adhering Flintlastic• SA PlyBase or MldPly, Cap (or SA Cap FR) enc laps, trim the underlying sheet's lower corner at the end of the roll. • Follow with the overlapping sheet, trimming the upper outside corner. • Corners should be trimmed on a diagonal angle 5-1/2' long from end of roll to outside edge. • Width of trim should be equal in width to the sldslap specified (3" for Fllntlastic SA Cap for SA Cap FR] and 2" for Flintlastic SA MldPly [or PlyBase]). • Trimmed corners should be. completely covered by application of succeeding courses. Note: If using Flintlastic SA PlyBase orMidPly, apply quarter -size dab of FlintBond at T-seam area. If using Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR), the endlap should be completely set in trowel grade FlintBond along the entire 6" lap width. Rake Edge Detail Cut selvage area at an angle at all rake edges. Apply a bead of FlintBond caulk along out edge to eliminate mole holes. specified, complete sheet metal flashing installation using cut PlyBase or MldPly flashing collars at all flashing details. All cap sheet flashings installed to transitions that overlap onto mineral surface must be set in a uniform troweling of FlintBond- trowel grade adhesive. Application of Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) Before Installing Flintlastic• SA Cap or SA Cap FR, sweep the underlying anchor sheet or base ply to remove any debris that could interfere with adhesion. To install Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR), start at the low point of the roof with an appropriate roll width to offset sidelaps from the underlying membrane a minimum of 18". Work with manageable lengths for proper handling. Position SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) with selvage edge release strip at high side of roof. Install in weather -lapped fashion, with no laps against the flow of water. Once positioned, lift and fold back (lengthwise) the lower half of the membrane. Remove the split release film and press firmly into place. Then repeat with the other (high side of the roof) half of the membrane. Follow the same layout and split release film procedures as for MldPly (or PlyBase), but overlap sidelaps 3" and endlaps 6". Use a weighted roller over the entire surface of Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) to secure It in place and prevent voids, working outward from the center of the sheet. As subsequent membrane lengths are installed, remove the selvage edge release strip Just prior to overlapping to keep the adhesive area protected and clean. Out endlaps at opposing diagonal corners at an angle approx. 3" by 5-1/2" from the corners to minimize T-seams. FlintBond trowel grade is required on the entire B" width of each endlap prior to overlapping. Apply a uniform 1/8"-1/4" troweling of the FlintBond on the entire width of the endlaps to the underlying membrane. Install the overlapping sheet. Always apply FlintBond (extend beyond underlying lap minimum 1141) on the entire width of any overlap when applying SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) over another mineral surface such as the SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) endlap. At all vertical and other flashing points, apply FIIntBond trowel grade wherever there is an overlap onto mineral surfacing. Once the membrane has had a chance to bond, check all laps and Joints for full adhesion. If the membrane can be lifted at any area it Is not properly adhered. A seam probing tool can be helpful to check for small voids at laps. If necessary, use appropriate hand-held hot air welding tool and seam roller or an application of FlintBond to seal small unbonded areas if they exist. Press membrane securely into place and repeat with the opposite half of the membrane. Use a heavy, weighted roller over the entire surface of the PlyBase or MldPly to secure the membrane. Work outwards to eliminate voids. Overlap sidelaps of subsequent PlyBase or MldPly membrane lengths 2" and endlaps 4". Offset (stagger) endlaps minimum 31. Out endlaps at opposing diagonal corners at an angle approximately 5-1/2" long by the selvage dimension from the corners to minimize "T"-seams. Apply a bead or small trowel dab (quarter size) of FIIntBond® SBS Modified Bitumen Adhesive, trowel or caulk grade, at the edge of the angled cut to avoid a capillary. Use of a hand-held hot air gun at the joint area prior to rolling the membrane will maximize adhesion. In areas prone to cold temperatures, snow and freeze -thaw cycles, It may be more effective to use the hot air gun to form joints, and to completely fill all mole holes with asphalt that has been slightly melted using the gun. It is recommended to apply a bead of FIIntBond SBS Modified Bitumen Adhesive, caulk grade, at all MldPly (or PlyBase) side and endlaps to eliminate a capillary. Do Not Leave Base Sheet Exposed To The Weather. Cover In the same day with optional SA Interply and SA Cap/SA Cap FR. Refer to CertainTeed Commercial Systems Specifications for comprehensive construction details. Application of Interply (optional) Note: Proceed to "Before Installing Flintlastic® SA Cap (or SA Cap FR)" If installing a 2-ply system. Before installing Flintlastic SA PlyBase or MldPly sweep the underlying anchor sheet or base ply to remove any debris that could interfere with adhesion. Start with PlyBase or MldPly at the low point of the roof with appropriate roll width to offset sidelaps 18" from sidelaps of anchor sheet or base ply. all flush to roof edge. Design layout so that no sidelaps are against the flow of water. Out rolls Into manageable lengths. Fold the membrane back halfway lengthwise to remove the split release film. Press membrane securely into place and repeat with the opposite half of the membrane. Use a heavy, weighted roller over the entire surface of the PlyBase or MldPly to secure the membrane. Work outwards to eliminate voids. Overlap sidelaps of subsequent PlyBase orMldPly membrane lengths 2" and endlaps 4". Offset (stagger) endlaps minimum 3'. Out endlaps at opposing diagonal corners at an angle approximately 5-1/2" long by the selvage dimension from the corners to minimize "T"-seams. Apply a bead or small trowel dab (quarter size) of FIIntSond SBS Modified Bitumen Adhesive, trowel or caulk grade, at the edge of the angled cut to avoid a capillary. Before installing Flintlastic SA Cap or SA Cap FR If roof edge detall utilizes edge metal, proceed as follows. If MldPly or (PlyBase) has been applied, Install minimum 26 gauge edge metal using appropriate fasteners, and set entirely in a uniform 1/8°-1/4" thick troweling of FIIntBond SBS Modified Bitumen Adhesive, trowel grade. Remove any oil from the metal surface using a vinegar and water solution. Prime the horizontal surface of the metal with FIIntPrime SA and allow primer to dry. Apply a bead of caulk grade FIIntBond adhesive to the edge of the metal where it meets the MldPly (or PlyBase). Proceed with Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR) installation. If an Interply is not specified, Install a 9" wide flashing strip of PlyBase or MldPly (material assumed to match base ply) "onto the field of the roof and flush to the roof edge, self -adhered. Install minimum 26 gauge edge metal using appropriate fasteners, set entirely in a uniform 1/8"-1/4" thick troweling of FIIntSond SBS Modified Bitumen Adhesive, trowel grade. Remove any oil from the metal surface using a vinegar and water solution. Prime the horizontal surface of the metal with FIIntPrime° SA and allow primer to dry. Apply a bead of caulk grade FlintBond at the roof side edge of the metal where It meets the flashing strip. Similarly, complete your sheet metal flashing installation using cut PlyBase or MldPly flashing collars at all flashing details prior to flashing application. Seal edges of PlyBase or MldPly flashing collars with a bead of FIIntBond. See "Typical Construction Details" pages for examples. If an Interply is specified, set flanges in trowel grade FIIntBond and properly fasten. If an interply Is not • Do not mix Flintlastic- SA membranes with other types of roof membranes. Flintlastic SA membranes are specifically designed to be applied together. The permanent top film of the MldPly, PlyBase and NaIlBase cannot receive torching, hot asphalt or other non self -adhering application methods. The Flintlastic SA Cap (or SA Cap FR), PlyBase and MldPly cannot be applied to any surfaces other than as described herein. • Do not use cold adhesives with Flintlastic SA membranes other than for flashing details and cap sheet overlaps as described herein. Refer to the CertainTeed Commercial Roof Systems Manual for complete requirements. When applying Flintlastic SA on slopes exceeding 1" in 12", membranes shall be back nailed. When applied parallel to the slope, Flintlastic SA shall be blind-nalled at end laps 2" in from top edge, 6" o.c. through tin discs and to wood nallers. Hand nailing generally provides a better seal than power -activated nailing. If nailing of the membrane is necessary on steep slopes during hot or extreme cold weather, backnail and cover the nails by overlapping with the next sheet. Extend the membrane on the roof deck above the highest expected level of water back-up from ice dams and above the highest expected level of snow and ice on the wall sheathing on vertical side walls (dormers) and vertical front walls for ice dam protection. Consider a double layer of membrane in critical areas, such as along the eaves or in valleys and in climates where severe ice dams are anticipated. Apply the membrane to the entire roof deck for wind -driven rain protection. Apply a new layer of GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® underlayment directly over the old GCP self -adhered underlayment (except GCP granular underlayments) in retrofit applications following the standard membrane application procedure. Precautions & Limitations • Slippery when wet or covered by frost. • Consistent with good roofing practice, always wear fall protection when working on a roof deck. • Release liners are slippery. Remove from work area immediately after membrane application. • Do not leave permanently exposed to sunlight. Cover within 90 days. • Place metal drip edges or wood starter shingles over the membrane. • Do not fold over the roof edge unless the edge is protected by a drip edge, gutter or other flashing material. • Do not install on the chamfered edges of wood plank. • Do not install directly on old roof coverings. • Certain product applications are prohibited in hot desert areas in the southwestern United States. Contact your GCP Applied Technologies sales representative for assistance choosing the best product for your application. • Check with the manufacturer of the metal roofing system for any special requirements when used under metal roofing. • Do not install under copper, COR-TEN®, or zinc metal roofing in high altitudes. These roofs can reach extremely high temperatures due to the low reflectivity, high absorption, and high conductivity of the metals. Use GRACE ULTRATm underlayment for these roof types. Contact your GCP Applied Technologies sales representative for assistance choosing the best product for your application. • Provide proper roof insulation and ventilation to help reduce ice dams and to minimize condensation. GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® membrane is an air and vapor barrier. • Repair holes, fishmouths, tears, and damage to membrane with a round patch of membrane extending past the damaged area 6 in. (150 mm) in all directions. If fasteners are removed leaving holes in the membrane, they must be patched. The membrane may not self -seal open fastener penetrations. • Do not install fasteners through the membrane over unsupported areas of the structural deck, such as over the joints between adjacent structural panels. • Due to its slight asphaltic odor, do not apply where the membrane is exposed to interior living space. Refer to product literature for more complete information. • Not compatible with EPDM or TPO; use GRACE ULTRAT' underlayment for tie-ins (refer to Technical Letter 5, chemical compatibility). • Not compatible with polysulfides, flexible PVC, or high concentrations of resin (pitch) found in some wood plank decks. For more information, refer to Technical Letter 5. Page 4 of 6 Installation Procedure Surface Preparation Install GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® roofing underlayment directly on a clean, dry, continuous structural deck. Some suitable deck materials include plywood, wood composition, wood plank, metal, concrete, and gypsum sheathing. Prior to membrane application, remove dust, dirt, loose nails, and old roofing materials, Protrusions from the deck area must be removed. Decks shall have no voids, damaged, or unsupported areas. Wood planks should be closely butted together. Repair deck areas as needed before installing the membrane. (Refer to Tech Letter #5, Chemical Compatibility, when installing over wood plank decks). Prime concrete, masonry surfaces and DensGlass Gold®with PERM-A-BARRIER®WB PRIMER. Prime wood composition and gypsum sheathing with PERM-A-BARRIER®WB PRIMER if adhesion is found to be marginal (refer to Technical Letter 12, Use on Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Roof Sheathing). Apply PERM-A-BARRIER®WB PRIMER at a rate of 250-350 ft2/gal (6-8 mz/L). Priming is not required for other suitable surfaces provided that they are clean and dry. Membrane Installation Apply GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® underlayment in fair weather when the air, roof deck, and membrane are at temperatures of 40 ° F (5 °C) or higher. Apply roof covering material at temperatures of 40 ° F (5 ° C) or higher. Cut the membrane into 10-15 ft (3-5 m) lengths and reroll loosely. Peel back 1-2 ft (300-600 mm) of release liner, align the membrane, and continue to peel the release liner from the membrane. Press the membrane in place with heavy hand pressure. Side laps must be a minimum of 3.5 in. (90 mm) and end laps a minimum of 6 in. (150 mm). For valley and ridge application, peel the release liner, center the sheet over the valley or ridge, drape, and press it in place. Work from the center of the valley or ridge outward in each direction and start at the low point and work up the roof. Alternatively, starting with a full roll of membrane, unroll a 3-6 ft (1-2 m) piece of membrane leaving the release liner in place. Align the membrane and roll in the intended direction of membrane application. Carefully cut the release liner on top of the roll in the cross direction being careful not to cut the membrane. Peel back about 6 in. (150 mm) of the release liner in the opposite direction of the intended membrane application exposing the black adhesive. Hold the release liner with one hand and pull the roll along the deck with the release liner, leaving the applied membrane behind. Use the other hand to apply pressure on the top of the roll. Stop frequently to press the membrane in place with heavy hand pressure. When finished with the roll go back to the beginning, reroll and pull the remaining release paper from the material, finishing the installation. For successive membrane courses, align the edge of the release liner with the dashed line provided on the surface of the membrane to achieve the 3.5 in. (90 mm) side lap. Consistent with good roofing practice, install the membrane such that all laps shed water. Always work from the low point to the high point of the roof. Apply the membrane in valleys before the membrane is applied to the eaves. Following placement along the eaves, continue application of the membrane up the roof. The membrane may be installed either vertically or horizontally. Page 3 of 6 • Reroofable — Unlike granular surfaced membranes, GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® smooth surface underlayment will not adhere to the underside of the exposed roof covering. GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® membrane can be applied over the old GCP self -adhered underlayment in retrofit applications, making re -roofing easier, less costly (since there is no need to remove the existing underlayment), more durable and environmentally friendly (as the structural deck remains intact avoiding the need to purchase additional wood decking). • Membrane will not crack, dry out or rot — GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® roofing underlayment resists attacks from fungus and bacteria; maintains its integrity for long lasting protection. • Local technical support — GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® roofing underlayment is backed by local technical support personnel that help ensure every application goes smoothly. Guidelines for Use GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELDO roofing membrane is used as an underlayment for sloped roofs to resist water penetration due to water back-up behind ice dams or wind -driven rain. GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® underlayment also offers leak protection in trouble prone spots like valleys, skylights, protrusions and other flashing areas. Ice Dams GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® roofing underlayment should be used in conjunction with roof designs that minimize ice dam formation. In cold climates, it is particularly important to provide proper insulation and ventilation to reduce the size of ice dams and to avoid interior condensation. Cathedral ceilings must include ventilation between rafters to allow for air flow to a ridge vent. Well ventilated cold roof designs are particularly important in alpine regions to reduce the size of ice dams which could contribute to structural damage. Several variables will influence the height of ice dams and the membrane coverage required. i. Climate — The annual snow fall will affect the amount of membrane needed. 2. Slope — On a low slope, ice dams will extend farther inward from the roof edge. 3. Overhang — A wide overhang will require more membrane to reach the appropriate point on the roof. 4. Insulation and ventilation — A very well insulated building with a cold, well ventilated attic will have smaller ice dams. 5. Valleys — Any valleys formed by projections such as dormers or roof direction changes are likely to trap more snow and cause larger ice dams. 6. Exposure — A northern exposure or shaded areas will generally contribute to larger ice dams. While gutters may make it easier for an ice dam to start, large dams can occur on roofs with no gutters. Removing snow from a roof edge or installing heat cables may not prevent ice dam formation, but may shift the location of the ice dam. Under certain conditions, a dam can form at the edge of the remaining snow. Local building codes should be consulted for specific requirements. The 2001 Uniform Building Code's description on Section 150.2 states: "Non-combustible Roof Covering: Non-combustible covering shall be one of the following: 4. Slate Shingles. The fire rating of Class A, B, or C is applied to a roofing assembly as a whole; any use of slate in a roofing assembly will only add to the overall fire rating. Section 1503 of the same code states further: "Non-combustible roof covering as defined in Section 1504.2 may be applied ... ... in lieu of a fire — retardant roofing assembly. " This can reduce the cost for the roofing installation. Additionally, the standard installation of slate roofing tiles using the double headlap method radically reduces the flow of hot gases into and out of the attic areas, thereby limiting the ingress of flame and fire. Due to the above points, insurance rates on buildings with slate roofs could be dramatically lower than when using other roofing materials — again reducing costs to homeowners and building operators. Top quality Natural Slate roofing supplied by American Slate Company will not fade or discolor; it is weather and freeze -thaw resistant and does not absorb water. It weighs the same as, or less than concrete tile. I trust the above will assist on future projects in these highly susceptible areas. ANSIIUL790 (ASTM El08) Test Report Project Number IOCA23622 dated July 8, 2010 is distributed by the National Slate Association for reference where the resistance to fire is a consideration in the selection of roof coverings. The testing was conducted by Underwriters Laboratories of Northbrook, Illinois under contract to the National Roofing Contractors Association and in co-operation with the National Slate Association. Testing was undertaken to independently re-establish the ability of North American produced, S-1 rated roofing slate to meet the requirements of a Class Afire rated roof system under current IBC codes. A test panel was assembled with a representative range of slate colors from National Slate Association quarry members from the United States and Canada. The test panel was constructed to meet the requirements of Section 6 of ASTM El08 Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Roof Coverings. Under the required Intermittent Flame Test and Burning Brand Test conducted by Underwriters Laboratories,'/a" thick, S-1 rated, North American produced roofing slate met the requirements of a Fire Class A roof covering when laid over ASTM D226 underlayment on a combustible roof deck. This is a proven method that we have used for several homes in Southern California including Newport Beach. 1. Apply one layer of WR Grace Ice and Water Shield to entire sloped roof area. Noted in their literature, this product "Seals around fasteners —The rubberized asphalt layer in GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD membrane seals around fasteners, resisting leakage caused by water -back up behind ice dames, or from wind driven rain. 2. Mechanically apply one layer of CertainTeed Mineral Surfaced FR Class A Cap Sheet. This product provides the best UV / Construction Traffic protection, and it Is fire rated. This protects the Grace Ice and Water Shield while roof is stacked for months preceding final installation of the slate (#4 below). 3. Prior to installing the slate, install one layer of GAF Versa Shield rolled membrane. 4. Install slate roof over the aforementioned items 1-3. If you need further assistance let me know. This type of system has been used by many roofers, and has worked for numerous projects over the years: 1. One layer of WR Grace Ice and Water Shied to all areas below the roof slate. 2. Mechanically applied one layer of CertainTeed Mineral Surfaced FR Class A Cap sheet providing UV protection. 3. Install one layer of GAF Versa Shield rolled membrane before installing the slate roof. 4. Install slate roof. Feel free to contact me directly at (912) 441-4345 if you have any additional questions.
