Remembering Wanda, the First Killer Whale Taken into
Captivity
by Kelsey McCallister
On the morning of November 18, 1961, a female orca or killer whale
got separated from her pod as they migrated past the Newport Beach
Harbor. She got horribly lost and found herself trapped in a dead end
near Lido Village. A collection crew sent from the now defunct
Marineland of the Pacific, located in Palos Verdes, quickly came down
to Newport to try to capture the animal so it could be put on exhibit at
their struggling theme park. Never before had an orca been captured
alive, and the beautiful 17-foot-long creature, named Wanda by the
onlooking crowds, tried her best to escape. For hours, the team from
Marineland chased her with their nets throughout the harbor and time
and time again, she would evade her captors. But by sundown, the
poor orca had become exhausted from dodging the boats and finally
gave up. Her 2 ton body was hoisted out of the water onto a flatbed
truck and driven to her new life in captivity. Once at Marineland,
Wanda was placed into a 100 by 50 foot oval tank and for two days
straight she swam in violent circles, repeatedly throwing herself
against the walls of her tank. No more than 48 hours after she had
been taken from her home in the Pacific Ocean, Wanda was dead.
Many believe this to be an act of suicide. It wasn't until five years later
that a killer whale would be captured alive again and since then, 166
orcas have been seized from the wild to be put on public display.

It is my opinion, and the opinion of my friend, Wyland (the famed
marine life muralist), that Wanda deserves a special memorial in her
honor and to commemorate the166 orcas that came after her.
