SPACE-O-MATIC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CALIFORNIA CORPORATION SOLVES PARKING PROBLEMS
As the value of real estate soars throughout California
and the United States, developers, builders, property owners
and architects are searching for ways to create more living and
commercial space by reducing the space required to park automo-
biles.
Space-O-Matic Inc., based in Marina del Rey, California,
produces a world-wide patented parking machine which provides
one solution to the real estate crunch by allowing two cars to
park in one space.
Ian Garrad, President of Space-O-Matic, says his vertical
parking machines create real estate by using air space inside
buildings or on open lots -- rather than valuable living and
commercial space.
And the machines are simple to operate. As Garrad explains,
""Just drive your car onto the platform, exit, push a control lever
and the car is raised six feet in the air, allowing another to
be parked underneath."
Since 1968, Space-O-Matic has been successfully market-
ing vertical parking machines.. And the popularity continues
to flourish.
In a decision that clearly proves the wide acceptance of
vertical parking, the Los Angeles City Planning Department and
the Los Angeles City Council Planning Commission recently en-
dorsed double -deck parking to meet code requirements for the
Playa del Rey Local Coastal Plan. And additional areas are
being considered.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE .. Page 2
CALIFORNIA CORPORATION SOLVES PARKING PROBLEMS .. Continued
Ed Johnson, city planner for the plan, says that "Vertical
parking machines make sense for developers. They make more space
available for living and commercial uses."
Johnson's observation is especially accurate in the Los
Angeles beachfront community of Playa del Rey, where real estate
sells for an astronomical $200 per square foot. Or about $30,000
per parking space! By doubling the number of cars in a parking
area, Space-O-Matic machines provide parking at a fraction of
the cost of new construction or buying nearby property.
Jack Lennon, Vice President of Wilshire West Company,
recently approved the installation of Space-O-Matic machines in
the Lawrence Welk Champagne Towers and adjoining 21-story General
Telephone high-rise on the oceanfront in Santa Monica. Lennon
says the machines "effectively solved a difficult parking problem
at the buildings."
Space-O-Matic machines have also proven successful in con-
dominiums. At the 60-unit Menlo Towers condominium in Menlo Park,
the 45 machines installed there in 1972 have performed flawlessly,
according to Jerry Miller, general manager for the towers.
"Space-O-Matic machines saved us a whole additional floor
of parking area. They are excellent machines and have required
minimum maintenance. I'm a firm 'believer," says Miller.
The reasons for the continuing popularity of Space-O-Matic
machines are perhaps best explained by Garrad.
"More and more people are now finding out that by expand-
ing areas vertically, more space can be created for rentable
commercial and living space. The skyrocketing cost -- and extreme
shortage -- of real estate has made the efficient use of every
square foot critical and profitable.' Our market is booming!"
World-wide installations of Space-O-Matics range from
prestigious Harrods department store in London, to the General
Motors Executive Building in Detroit, to sites in bustling Tokyo,
and have doubled parking in condominiums, apartment and office
buildings and many types of business establishments around the
United States and throughout the world.

Dear Ian:
We installed ten of your Space-O-Matic units almost 15 years
ago in our building located at the corner of Wilshire
Boulevard and Hope Street.
Our experience with the operation of the units has been
exemplary in every respect. The units have required, in
my opinion, a minimum of service and what work has been
required has been handled by your firm in a very efficient
and satisfactory manner. Operating and maintenance costs
are difficult to isolate from our garage operating expense
for the reasons as stated above.
All in all I wish we had more room to install additional
Space-O-Matic units. The cost of the units installed is
approximately one-third the cost of constructing subterranean
parking spaces at present.
Keep up the good work.
Very truly yours,

Dear Ian:
We installed ten of your Space-O-Matic units almost 15 years
ago in our building located at the corner of Wilshire
Boulevard and Hope Street.
Our experience with the operation olf thi units has been
exemplary in every respect. The units have required, in
my opinion, a "miziimum of service and what work has been
required has been handled by your firm in a very efficient
and satisfactory manner. Operating and maintenance costs
are difficult to isolate from our garage operating expense
for the reasons as stated above.
All in all I wish we had -more room to install additional
Space-O-Matic units. The cost of the units installed is
approximately one-third the cost of constructing subterranean
parking spaces at present.
Keep up the good work.
Very truly yours,
C. L. PEC - ROBERT S. NORMAN

WE HAD 48 OF YOUR MACHINES INSTALLED IN OUR MENLO TOWERS
CONDOMINIUM COMPLEX SOME 13 YEARS AGO. THE MACHINES ARE
OPERATED BY THE CONDO OWNERS - ONE OF WHOM IS 8E YEARS OF
AGE! - WHICH PROVES HOW EASY THEY ARE TO OPERATE,
THE SPACE-G-MATIC INSTALLATION SAVED PNLOfTOWERS AN ADDI-
TIONAL FLOOR OF PARKING - WHICH WAS AN IMPORTANT FINANACIAL
DECISIONS
YOUR SERVICE HAS BEEN EXCELLENT, EACH CONDOMINIUM OWNER
OWNSHIS OWN SPACE-G-MATIC PARKING UNIT, AND MANAGEMENT
SCHEDULES SEMI -YEARLY MAINTENANCE. THIS SERVICE EXPENSE
HAS BEEN IN THE AREA OF $12.00 PER ANNUN PER MACHINE. I
WISH I COULD SAY THAT ABOUT OTHER MAINTENANCE EXPENSE IN
THE BUILDING
OUR TENANTS ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH YOUR MACHINES AND THE
LACK OF SERVICE PROBLEMS DUE TO THE EXCELLENT SERVICE PERSONNEL
WHO SERVICE THE MACHINES AND HELP US TO MAINTAIN THESE MACHINES
WITH VALUABLE COST SAVING ADVICE.
THE MENLO TOWERS ASSOCIATION TAKES CARE OF THE POWER PACK
EXPENSES, WHICH TO DATE, HAVE ONLY COST IN THE VICINITY OF
$3O0.00 DURING THIS 13 YEAR PERIOD. TO US THIS IS THE ONLY
WAY TO STORE AUTOMOBILES SAFELY AND ECONOMICALLY.

Re: Sorreto Villa Apartments 846 4th Street, Santa Monica, CA
Dear Mr. Garrad,
We purchased Sorrento Villa Apartments about December 1977,
and the twelve Space-O-Matic parking machines were installed
in this 32-unit apartment building.
Since that time I wish to state that the machines have been
operating in a very satisfactory manner. We have rarely called
for service, and when we have, we have received a completely
satisfactory response.
We do not have attendant parking ... the machines are operated
by the tenants in our building.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Garrad:
Since February 21, 1968 there have been five of your
Space-O-Matic double deck parking machines in the apart-
ment building we now manage:
Magnolia Gardens
280 East California
Pasadena, Califo-nia 91106
The units were purchased due to the fact that there was
difficulty in renting the apartments due to a shortage
of parking spaces for the tenants. The problem was com-
pounded as the City of Pasadena did not allow overnight
parking on the streets adjacent to our building.
We want you to know that the machines have been in con-
tinuous operation over the past 14-year period and have
operated without any problems, and your service has been
efficient and prompt, and none of our tenants have been
inconvenienced.
The machines are operated by our tenants, we do not re-
quire a parking attendant.
