General Contractor: Grissinger Fine Homes
Project Address: 1927 Port Cardiff Place, Newport Beach, CA
Subject: Site observations for shoring and caissons
Date: June 21, 2023
File No. 8636-10
Arrived on site this morning to observe drilling operations for the rear yard shoring and excavation at the
request of the general contractor. The subcontractor (Altergott Construction), the drilling contractor
(Drilco) and the general contractor were also on site. It was immediately apparent that the
subcontractor had made vertical cuts along the rear of the property and that one caisson had been
drilled to a depth of approximately 21 feet. The contractor indicated that groundwater was encountered
at a depth of 15 to 16 feet. The vertical cuts along the rear property lines vary in height between four
to five feet. The geotechnical report states that, temporary cuts of 1:1 (horizontal: vertical) above a 3-
foot-high, single bench is expected be appropriate for trenching. Along property lines, cuts of 1:1 or
flatter are typically prudent and are required by the City of Newport Beach. The material exposed in
temporary excavations should be evaluated by the Contractor and Geotechnical Consultant during
excavation and construction. The contractor should reestablish the slope area in accordance with the
approved grade grading plans and geotechnical report.
It was also noted and discussed that the shoring detail does not illustrate the lagging for the proposed
excavation extending to the total depth of excavation on the grading plans. Shoring / lagging should be
performed and installed to the total excavation depth in accordance with the geotechnical report.
Our field geologist remained on site for observation and documentation of caisson drilling. Line and
grade to be determined by others.
Respectfully Submitted.

Subject: Site observation of rear shoring drilling
Arrived on site this morning at the request of the general contractor (Grissinger) and the drilling contractor
(Drilco) to observe and document the excavations for the proposed rear shoring at the subject site. The
reference drawings are the Shoring/Retaining Wall Details and Notes plan prepared by ESI/FME Inc., dated
January 5, 2023. The shoring plans call for a minimum solider pile embedment of 22 feet below the pad
surface grade of 201.63 feet. The driller used a Soilmec STM-20 truck mounted drill rig with a 18 inch flight
auger to excavate the proposed shoring pile borings.
Drilling conditions were generally as anticipated with blackish grey sandy clay and tan brown clayey sand fill
materials to depths of 15-16 feet below current adjacent surface grades over native terrace deposists
consisting of olive grey silt. Significant groundwater was observed in the caisson shafts. After sitting open for
more than an hour, pooled groundwater was observed at approximately 8 feet below below current adjacent
surface grades in all open shoring pile excavations. 2-3 feet of caved material was observed in the borings
after sitting open for more than 1 hour. The driller used an 18 inch bucket auger to clear the loose debris
from the shoring pile excavations before placing steel in the borings. The following excavations were drilled
to the required minimum depth/elevation today and, from a geotechnical standpoint, are suitable for
placement of the steel cages and concrete.

plans to keep the casing in place over night and clear loose debris from the boring before placing steel and
pouring concrete tomorrow. The following excavations were drilled to the required minimum depth/elevation
today and, from a geotechnical standpoint, are suitable for placement of the steel cs es and concrete.

Drilling conditions were generally as anticipated with blackish grey sandy clay and tan brown clayey sand fill materials to
depths of 13-14 feet below current adjacent surface grades over native terrace deposits consisting of olive grey silt.
Goundwater was observed in the caisson shafts, generally below the depth of the fill materials.
SP-10 was drilled to total depth without the need for surface casing. Wet cuttings were observed at a depth of about 15 feet
during drilling.
Previously drilled caisson borehole SP-8 had about 4 feet of loose debris in the bottom of the borehole with the
groundwater level at a depth of about 10 feet. The borehole was cleaned out with the auger to total depth prior to
placing the pile.
When SP-12 had been drilled to a depth of about 10 feet, the borehole caved to a depth of about 7 feet. Therefore,
surface casing was utilized to reinforce the caving zone. The surface casing was 15 feet long and 20-inch diameter. The
casing was placed such that the bottom was at a depth of approximately 11 feet below the pad grade. Drilling then
continued at SP-12 to a depth of 16 feet at the end of the day at which time groundwater accumulation in the hole was
minimal due to the drilling to remove the wet cuttings. Drilling of SP-12 is planned to resume tomorrow followed by
placement of steel and concrete.
The following excavations were drilled to the required minimum depth/elevation today and, from a geotechnical
standpoint, are suitable for placement of the steel piles and concrete.

Subject: Site observations for pool bottom excavation
Date: July 28, 2023
File No. 8636-10
Arrived on sitetodayat noon to observe the pool bottom excavation at the request of the general
contractor. The subcontractor had excavated for the pool in the right rear corner of the property. The
excavation extended approximately 5 to 6 feet below the adjacent grade into the recently constructed
engineered fill. The contractors were in the process of excavating for the proposed drain line across the
pool. The fills observed in the pool bottom consisted of reddish brown cement treated clayey sands.
The fills were also observed to be firm and moist, yielding less than 1 inch when probed under weight.
Based upon our observations and testing, it is our opinion that, from a geotechnical standpoint, the
pool excavation is considered suitable for the installation of steel reinforcement and concrete.
Line and grade to be determined by others.

minimal due to the drilling to remove the wet cuttings. Drilling of SP-12 is planned to resume tomorrow followed by
placement of steel and concrete.
The following excavations were drilled to the required minimum depth/elevation today and, from a geotechnical
standpoint, are suitable for placement of the steel piles and concrete.

A tremie pipe should be used to displace the water in the caisson excavations while pouring concrete. This memorandum is
not intended t0 verify pile length or steel reinforcement.
Additionally, 5 lagging boards were placed within each bay between SP-2 and SP-7 and 4 lagging boards were placed
within the bay between SP-1 and SP-2.
Our services do not include verification of line and grade for the subject shoring piles or pad grades, which was
checked by others. Table elevations are based on the contractor's surveys and staking.
