Dear Newport Beach Mayor & Members of the City Council:
I'm a minority, small business owner of Celebrity Cleaners for 30 years in Newport Beach. I
am also a resident, raising a family here.
I'm very concerned about the proposal for brick & mortal service businesses to accept cash
payments.
I strongly believe it is wrong to force selected service small businesses to accept cash
payments. It is harmful and you are imposing more burden on small businesses already
struggling to make a living.
I have witnessed many traumatised incidents and I'm also a victim of being burglarised.
• People have broken into my store, with chains hooked onto their truck & pulled the
glass doors looking for cash
• People broke into my back doors, cutting the office wall to go through the Jewelry
store next door to my business
• The Jewelry store next to me was robbed many times
• 3 masked men got out of their truck and ambushed a customer walking out of the
Jewelry store in the middle of the day
• The Liquor store in my center was robbed for cash
• The fast food Chinese restaurant that was in my center was broken into for cash
• The pizza restaurant in my center got robbed for cash
• The bagel place (Shirley Bagels) was robbed for cash
• We do not have any security in my shopping center
• Other large establishments in the city WITH security (like Neiman Marcus) have been
robbed during the day many times
• There have been numerous Incidents in Fashion Island with customers being robbed
during the day. Within the last week, 2 men were ambushed with gunshots
Another point I would like to make is the city of Newport Beach will lose some income from
cash businesses since many will not fully report the income.
• I want to know why Newport Beach is targeting selected, small business owners to
accept cash payments when adjacent cities are not required to accept cash payments.
This is discrimination.
I am asking you to reconsider and not require small service businesses to accept cash.
There are so many options to take payments , like Zelle/ Venmo (that act like cash),
Apple Pay, Credit Cards or debit card payments.
You are infringing on our constitutional rights and putting us at risk during this
terrible, crime -ridden time In Orange County
Warm Regards
