Dear Council,
Thank you for your intent to authorize the
removal of lower Newport Bay dredged
material that is unsuitable for open ocean
disposal and place it into the Port of Long
Beach Pier G Slip Fill Project.
For those of us who have been closely
following, researching, and advocating for a
resolution over the past six years, this
represents a responsible and definitive step
toward cleaning up and restoring the Bay.
This proposal reflects a thoughtful and
effective solution that prioritizes the health
of our harbor and surrounding environment.
That being said, it is essential to have a
contingency plan in place. Should those
responsible for meeting the required
deadlines face unforeseen challenges, the
Long Beach Pier Wind project should serve
as a viable backup option.
Please remember this fundamental
principle: removing toxins from the Bay
only to return them to the Bay is not a true
cleanup effort. A comprehensive and lasting
solution is critical for the well-being of our
community and ecosystem.
Thank you for your leadership and
commitment to this vital issue.
Sincerely,
Shana Conzelman
