Report phish using the Phish Alert Button above. Dear City Council, I am writing to express my vehement opposition to building residential high rises where the Newpot Beach Car Wash and Big Edwards Movie Theater are in Fashion Island for many reasons... Initially, the car wash and movie theater in Fashion Island are fixtures in our community and places we go every day. The car wash is the best! People I know drive from LA regularly to have their cars washed there. They eat and shop at Fashion Island while their cars are being washed/detailed, so it supports other businesses in our community. The movie theater is an icon which was build by Mr. Edwards for movie premiers and is an integral part of our community. It is the centerpiece of our impressive Newport Beach Film Festival and, in an era when movie theaters are being torn down, we need to fight to save it. Secondly, our community cannot withstand the additional congestion that these residential buildings will bring. Have traffic studies been conducted? It is hard enough to get across town at quitting time or any time during the summer as it is. Adding hundreds of cars to Fashion Island will make driving through our community even more difficult and an ongoing cluster. Thirdly, the multi -unit residential buildings that are being built today are deplorable! The only concern is building cheaply and charging as much as possible so the most profit can be made. This eliminates thoughtful design with any architectural interest and/or style that reflects the location of the buildings. They all look like cardboard boxes stacked on top of each other. It also eliminates quality materials and workmanship which results in poorly constructed buildings. This creates problems for the people who buy these units as well as the community surrounding them. The developers also try to cram too many units together which is inhumane and unjustified. The results look like the Projects but are certainly not subsidized housing as they go on the market for millions of dollars per unit. We do not want any more of these buildings in Newport Beach! I understand that we are under pressure from the state to build more residences, and I am not happy about that at all, but there are other places where this can be done. There is a lot of misused space between Bristol, Campus and Jamboree where developers can put up poorly designed, cheaply build and massively over crowded residential buildings without disrupting what make the area around Newport Harbor so special. Finally, I am tired of people who move to our community and try to change it for their own profit. It is common knowledge that our City Council members are more interested in making money for themselves than maintaining the integrity of what makes our community so special. This greed and thoughtlessness will result in Newport Beach turning into another Marina del Rey! If we wanted to live in Marina del Rey, we would. Marina del Rey is horrible! ! ! ! Do not turn Newport Beach into Marina del Rey! I have taken the time to send this email and am hopeful that it will be read. The City Council has a reputation for making up their minds before the public comment meetings which makes it feel like a waste of time, but I have to try. Newport Beach is a very special place and we cannot allow it to be negatively and permanently altered by those who just want to profit off of it. Sincerely, Courtney Richards - Native resident of a family who has lived in Newport Beach since the 50's and whose father was a residential contractor who valued quality design and workmanship in a community that he loved.
