Additionally, there is currently one unscheduled vacancy on the City Arts Commission. The process to fill the vacancies is provided in City Council Policy A-2 (Boards, Commissions and Committees). As part of this process, a City Council Ad Hoc Committee interviewed applicants and made nomination recommendations as provided below. All vacancies were noticed according to the Maddy Act and City Council Policy A-2. RECOMMENDATIONS: a) Determine this action is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Sections 15060(c)(2) and 15060(c)(3) of the CEQA Guidelines because this action will not result in a physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly; and b) Make appointments to the Boards and Commissions from the nominees listed below: Board of Library Trustees [1 vacancy] Timothy (Chase) Rief (incumbent) Jennifer Strong Building and Fire Board of Appeals [1 vacancy] Charles Allen (incumbent) K. On Saturday, April 5, 2025, the Notice of Vacancies was published in the Daily Pilot. The deadline to submit applications was Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Pursuant to City Council Policy A-2, Mayor Joe Stapleton established a Council Ad Hoc Appointments Committee comprised of himself, Mayor Pro Tern Lauren Kleiman, and Councilmember Michelle Barto. The Council Ad Hoc Appointments Committee was charged with reviewing applications and making recommendations to the City Council to fill the vacancies on the City's Boards and Commissions scheduled to occur on June 30, 2025, and to fill the remaining term of the unscheduled vacancy on the City Arts Commission that is scheduled to expire on June 30, 2026. Upon review of the applications and following interviews on May 21, 2025, the Council Ad Hoc Appointments Committee is requesting that the City Council confirm the nominations as listed in the above recommendations. The City Council will make appointments to fill these vacancies at its Tuesday, June 24, 2025 City Council meeting. All new terms will be effective July 1, 2025, with an expiration date of June 30, 2029, with the exception of the appointment to fill the remaining term of the unscheduled vacancy on the City Arts Commission, which will expire June 30, 2026. ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW: Staff recommends the City Council find this action is not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Sections 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment) and 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in Section 15378) of the CEQA Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, because it has no potential for resulting in physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly. At the time, no spots were available and so I waited for about a year until last week when an email arrived with welcomed news: There's an opening for the Newport Beach Arts Commission this year. For me, this commission would be an excellent fit to use my skill set and experience for the betterment of our city. The arts have always played a prominent role in my life. Throughout my childhood growing up in New York, I was a singer/songwriter, studying jazz performance and opera at the Manhattan School of Music, performing at Carnegie Hall and appearing with my band at various clubs in NYC. While attending college at Columbia University, I studied American literature and art history, and participated in the university's creative writing program. After college, I received an M.S. in journalism from Northwestern's Medill School. After graduation, I worked for about a year as an editor and reporter at the largest B20 magazine in the nation (headquartered in Chicago), before I was recruited to be the writer for a brand-new real estate company that was about to launch: Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. I worked at the company for more than five years, infusing an ever-growing penchant for creativity into our marketing and communications campaigns, eventually becoming the Global Director of PR, Communications & Digital Media for the brand. While working there, I also launched a biog tailed little word studio, publishing short fiction based on artwork and covering some local events around Newport Beach. In 2018, 1 left that job to start my own creative agency based right here in Newport Beach. (Berkshire Hathaway HomeService is now our client.) Today, my agency works with Fortune 500 companies, some of the nation's most powerful CEOs, the largest real estate companies in the nation and multi -million -dollar startups.
