Dear Mrs. Gross and Family,
Robyn Grant
Sara J. Weber
On behalf of the Newport Beach City Council and our entire community, I extend our
Erik Kenneth Weigand
deepest condolences on the passing of Chief Charles Gross.
At last night's City Council meeting, we adjourned in Chief Gross's memory, a small
but sincere gesture to honor a man whose leadership, integrity, and service left a
lasting impact on our city.
Chief Gross's legacy is one of dedication and distinction. After 28 years with the Los
Angeles Police Department, culminating in his role as Deputy Chief of Special
Investigations, he brought his expertise and steady guidance to Newport Beach,
serving as our city's fourth Chief of Police from 1977 until his retirement in 1985. His
commitment to public safety helped shape the culture of professionalism that
continues to define our Police Department today.
Even after retirement, Chief Gross remained a vital part of the Newport Beach
Police Department family. His involvement in the NBPD Retired Association and the
wisdom he shared with colleagues, young and seasoned alike, was invaluable. He
was not only a respected leader but also a kind and generous man, admired by
those who had the privilege to serve with him and know him personally.
Please know that our hearts are with you during this difficult time, We are grateful for
Chief Gross's life of service and will remember him with honor and affection.
With deepest sympathy,
9 D---
Joe Stapleton
Mayor
