HomeMy WebLinkAboutSS - 9(a) - Grading Adjacent To Cliff Drive (Arthofer Property)TO: CITY COUNCIL FROM: Public Works Department SUBJECT: GRADING ADJACENT TO CLIFF DRIVE (ARTHOFER PROPERTY) July 10, 1972 STUDY SESSION ITEM NO. 9(a) At the June 26, 1972 study session of the City Council, the Council requested a report on the use of large pieces of broken concrete in the grading operation on the Arthofer property along Cliff Drive. The grading permit for the project required (1) that the owner engage a qualified soils engineer, and (2) that the engineer certify that all fill material had been placed in an acceptable manner. The firm of Maurseth, Howe and Lockwood, foundation engineers and geologists has been retained by the property owner. The firm is well qualified and they have had a soils technician on the site full time during the grading operations. All organic material has been removed from the site as well as wire, reinforcing steel, and other miscellaneous pieces of junk. However, pieces of broken concrete slabs and sections of curb and gutter have been incorporated into the fill. The pieces of concrete have been spread out so that there is not a concentration of them in any one area. Also the larger pieces of concrete have been held back approximately 5 feet from the face of the fill slope. This method of incorporating broken concrete, rocks, etc: into a fill is common practice and is approved in both the State Division of Highways' and the city's Standard Specifi- cations. Upon completion of the fill, the area should be structurally sound and free from any problem relating to slippage or subsidence. seph T blic W PD/bg k evlin s Director
