BICYCLE SAFETY COMMITTEE

1. The meeting was called to order at 4:30 pm and introductions were made
2. Old Business: Capital Projects.
a. Key intersections ‐ the striping program is aimed for an October start date. On Spyglass, the
Homeowners Association (HOA) has requested the median line be painted to eliminate the
gap, which will be done. Staff will try to schedule a Study Session for City Council on the
changes.
b. Utility vehicles ‐ the property management association for the master association in Newport
Coast has been asked to come up with suggested solutions for maintenance vehicles in bike
lanes.
3. Old Business: Education and outreach
a. Bike map ‐ the plan is to put it online in draft form and ask for comments before going to a
print version.
b. Most of the September meeting will be devoted to Bike Week planning. Suggestions include
contacting a local action sports company to have their bike team perform (John Heffernan
will make the contact), have restaurants participate, have a ride and picnic (police
department will check special events calendar). A suggestion was made about having a Back
Bay loop with various entities participating. The committee wanted to wait until Denis
LaBonge was present to discuss the November bike ride.
4. OCBC update: Mr. Petros reported that Charles Larwood of OCTA is looking for bike‐related
projects. Mr. Petros and Mayor Pro Tem Gardner will contact him.
5. Corona del Mar (CdM) Business Improvement District (BID) meeting: Sean Matsler reported on the
BID meeting. They were interested in Sharrows and liked the idea of green ones. They asked for a
short list of pros and cons. Mr. Matsler and Mr. Petros will bring back a list. The BID also asked for a
priority list of suggested bike rack locations in CdM.
6. Police report: there were 16 reported bike injury accidents in June. Twelve were deemed the
cyclist’s fault. Where cars were at fault, three were “dooring”. Mr. Heffernan reported that in the
Netherlands they train drivers to open the door with the right hand, forcing them to turn and look
for cyclists. The department is preparing a survey of five years’ worth of data. The department has
a potential donor of helmets and is pursuing the best method of distribution, particularly for at‐risk
youth.
7. New Business
a. Bike storage—the committee was asked to comment on bike storage lockers. They felt that
the example shown was unnecessary and better suited for train stations. Steve Sholkoff
distributed photos of bike racks in Ashland, OR which the committee liked.
8. Public comment
No comments were offered.
9. The LA Dept. of Transportation has completed its year‐long study of Sharrows. The report is
available at their web site and also on Frank Peters’ web site.
The meeting was adjourned. Next meeting, SEPTEMBER 12, 2011, in the Friends Room, Central Library.
