MINUTES
September 12, 2011
ATTENDING:
Committee Members - Mayor Pro Tem Gardner, Tom Croxton, Barbara Danzi, John
Heffernan, Denis LaBonge, Sean Matsler, Tony Petros
Staff - Dave Kiff, Brad Sommers, Jay Johnson, Dale Johnson, Tony Brine
Members of the Public – Jim Mosher, Frank Peters
The meeting was called to order at 4:30 pm.
OLD BUSINESS: CAPITAL PROJECTS
a. Key Intersections—the proposed plan will be presented to City Council on
September 27. John Heffernan asked about the striping on San Joaquin Hills
Road by the locked gate. It was supposed to have been done; Mr. Sommers
will follow up.
b. Sharrows—pros and cons were submitted by Mr. Brine and Mr. Matsler and will
be forwarded to the CdM BID. There was a brief discussion on signs.
c. Bike rack locations were reviewed. One suggestion was added will be
forwarded to the BID.
OLD BUSINESS: EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
a. November Bike Ride—Ms. LaBonge proposed folding it into a subsequent
project
b. Bike Week—after much discussion, it was decided to focus on one event in
the spring utilizing the Back Bay loop. At the next meeting, staff from the
Recreation Department will attend to help in shaping the event. Ms. Danzi
will contact Hoag about involvement. Mr. Brine will contact OCTA and also
see if someone from OCTA can attend the next meeting.
POLICE REPORT
The trend of incidents is downward. Most of the incidents involved
intoxication and were on the peninsula.
PUBLIC COMMENT
1. Frank Peters presented suggestions from bikeNewportBeach.org, some of
which will be on the next agenda.
2. Jim Mosher suggested posting no-parking signs around school during the
times students are arriving and leaving to encourage bike riding; he also
inquired about timers at signals.
