May 2, 2011 Meeting Minutes
1. The meeting was called to order at 4:35 p.m. and introductions were made.
2. Old Business - Capital Projects
a. Downhill speed advisory signs should be up in the next 2-3 weeks
b. Tony Petros compared Belmont Shore’s Second Street with Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)
through Corona del Mar (CdM), noting that Second Street is flat, has no visibility
obstructions, and signals every 300 feet which keeps traffic at a reasonable speed. These
conditions are not true in CdM. The next meeting someone from the city attorney’s office
will be present to discuss liability.
c. Brad Sommers did a presentation on key intersections and proposals to clarify bike paths,
etc. Newport Coast Drive/73, Bonita Canyon and MacArthur, and PCH at MacArthur,
Avocado and Newport Center were discussed. The committee was supportive of the
suggested improvements and mentioned other intersections that should be addressed in the
future.
3. Old Business - Education and Outreach
a. Brad Sommers put up a new and improved map. Tony Petros said he would give a file to
the city that would contain safety information, etc. for the back of the map. Additional
suggestions were to include trail heads for Crystal Cove dirt bike trails and major
connections with neighboring cities.
b. Bike Ride — May 15, leaving from OASIS Senior Center. Banners are prepared. Frank
Peters got some volunteers to help with the ride.
c. Cyclovia— Seventeenth St. was suggested for a cooperative Cyclovia with Costa Mesa.
Brad suggested using Mariners Park as a starting point. Nancy will mention it at Council.
d. OCBC Update — they held Traffic 101 for eight OCTA engineers. There will be a Ride of
Silence 5/18 starting at Irvine City Center.
4. Police Department Report - In a crackdown on cell phone use and texting while driving, 264
citations were issued in a 23-day period.
5. New Business - There was a discussion about maintenance vehicles parked in the street with
the suggestion that they be required to use cones as an alert.
6. Public Comment - A compliment on actually making progress; a suggestion for a street sign
about road sharing.
7. Adjournment
