CITIZENS BICYCLE SAFETY COMMITTEE
DRAFT MEETING MINUTES
March 5, 2012
1. WELCOME/CALL THE MEETING TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 4:35 pm.
2. ROLL CALL AND SELF-INTRODUCTIONS
Committee Members Present – Mayor/Chair Gardner, Michael Alti, Lou Cohen,
Robert Kahn, Denis LaBonge, Sean Matsler, and Tony Petros
Committee Members Absent – Frank Peters
City Staff - Brad Sommers and Tony Brine
Members of the Public – Minglie Chen, David Huntsman, Eddy Huntsman, Brenda
Miller, Les G. Miklosy, Dan Murphy, Dan Purcell and Ron Wortman
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes from the previous meeting were not approved because there are
only three members of the current committee who were members previously;
therefore, there was not a quorum for approval.
4. REPORT ON COMMITTEE PRIORITY PROJECTS/EFFORTS
a. Bike Racks – a list of previously suggested areas will be mailed to members,
and the list will be prioritized at the next meeting.
b. Improving Critical Intersections – a list of previously suggested intersections will
be distributed for prioritization. Proposed work on the 73 Intersection is stalled
at CalTrans but Mr. Sommers will bring it back for additional discussion.
Grinding has been done which helps. The new striping is helpful in instructing
drivers where the bikes are.
c. Improving Safety around Schools – members will bring back suggestions for
schools to focus on at the next meeting for prioritization. A member of the
school board will be invited to a future meeting.
d. Community Education
1) Signage - bike route signs have been placed in CdM. A suggestion was
made to include wayfinding signs with mileage for the City.
2) Maps – members will review the draft map for corrections. It needs good
bike routes marked out. Making an application out of it was discussed.
Smart phones can access the City’s website, Mayor/Chair Gardner will
touch base with IT to see how much bike information can be made

accessible. Mr. Alti will review Google Maps for Newport Beach’s bike
routes and report on any changes necessary.
e. Safety Update – Police - No discussion was held, no officers present.
f. Sharrows - it was suggested to add sharrows for further discussion. A brief
report was made on what had been discussed previously.
5. DISCUSSION: HOW CAN THE COMMITTEE BETTER INVOLVE RECREATIONAL RIDERS
AND OTHER GROUPS TO FURTHER IMPROVE BIKE SAFETY?
Mr. Petros noted that recreational cyclists tend to ride at the busiest times in
terms of car traffic. Mayor/Chair Gardner suggested additional sidewalks for
bikes.
6. PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA.
a. Mr. Petros asked that the committee’s mission be included with the agenda
to keep the committee focused;
b. An ordinance banning the hassling of bike riders was proposed;
c. bikenewport.org volunteered to start a forum on its website.
7. ITEMS FOR FUTURE AGENDAS (NON-DISCUSSION ITEM)
a. Sharrows
b. Ask the City Council to mandate bike lanes, etc., be mandatory for all
project planning.
c. Back Bay
