RESOLUTION NO. 3955
WHEREAS, the sewers of Newport Beach are badly fouled; and
WHEREAS, the Peninsula trunk line shows sulphide concen-
trations that are surprisingly high for the month of March; and
WHEREAS, velocities are about two - thirds as great as
those calculated for reasonably clean sewers; and
WHEREAS, low velocity and fouled sewers cause high sul-
phide concentration in sewers; and
WHEREAS, high sulphide concentrations in sewers cause
odors from pump stations and manholes and cause serious damage to
concrete and metal in these structures;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Manager
instruct the sewer maintenance department of the City to cause
Peninsula trunk line and such lateral sewer lines as may be
necessary to be cleaned; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that said maintenance department
be instructed to cause lime treatments to be made at certain
designated locations and at, certain designated times in order
that a sewage that willcontain dissolved sulphides not in excess
of one -tenth (0.10) parts per million may be obtained; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that should a result of one -tenth
(0.10) parts per million dissolved sulphides be impossible to
attain, then said maintenance department shall be instructed to
cause a solution of sodium nitrate to be introduced into the
sewer mains at designated locations and in designated quantities;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that said maintenance department be
instructed to take samples and make sulphide tests of said sewage
at designated locations and at designated times and give the
results of said tests to the City Manager.
The above and foregoing Resolution was duly passed and
adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
