HomeMy WebLinkAbout6129 - Assembly Bill 1799i - e t THS<mec 4/15/65 RESOLUTION N0, 6129 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH OPPOSING ASSEMBLY BILL 1799 • WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1799 would add Section 517 to the Public Resources Code of the State of California requiring the State Department of Parks and Recreation to issue rules and regulations governing the sport of surfboard riding on any of the waters of the Pacific Ocean bordering upon the State, its tide- land areas, or upon any beach or park adjacent to such waters; and WHEREAS, said bill also would permit the Department of Parks and Recreation to appoint volunteer, part -time, or full- time surfing rangers to regulate and police surfers upon such areas in a manner to be determined by the Department; and WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach is a coastal commu- nity which has within its jurisdiction extensive public beach areas- and WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach has enacted ordinances which regulate the sport of surfboard riding within the City, which rules and regulations are enforced by local enforcement officers; F"E WHEREAS, the City Council is firmly convinced that there is no need for State regulation of the sport of surfing and that the control of surfing activities should be left in the hands of local authorities; and WHEREAS, the passage of Assembly Bill 1799 would invali- date said City ordinances and deprive the City of local control; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of • the City of Newport Beach is firmly opposed to the passage of Assembly Bill 1799 and urges other cities throughout the State of California to join with it in its efforts to defeat this proposed legislation, • ADOPTED this 12th day of April, 19650 ATTEST: Mayor City Clerk W 2, r i • STATE OF CALIFORNIA ) COUNTY OF ORANGE ) CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH) I, MARGERY SCHROUDER, City Clerk of the City of Newport Beach, California, do hereby certify that according to the records of the City of Newport Beach filed and maintained in my office, the foregoing Resolution No. 6129 was duly and regularly adopted, passed, and approved by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, California, at a regular meeting of said City Council held at the regular meeting place thereof, on the 12th day of April , 19 65 , by the following vote, to wit: AYES, COUNCILMEN: Stoddard F°orgit, Cook, Elder, Gruber, Marshall, Parsons NOES, COUNCILMEN: None ABSENT, COUNCILMEN: None Dated this 16th day of April 19 65 i City Clerk and Ex- fficio Clerk of the City Council, City of Newport Beach, State of California.
