RESOLUTION NO. .6355
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING ITS SUPPORT FOR THE
PROPOSED $850 MILLION METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT
BOND ISSUE
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern
California is faced with the necessity of building pipelines,
tunnels and other facilities to distribute water from Northern
8 California throughout Southern California to insure adequate
9 future supplies; and
10 WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Pater District has placed an
11 $850 million water bond issue to finance the project on the June
12 7 ballot; and
13 WHEREAS, a construction program of this magnitude would
14 increase ez4ployment, expand purchasing power, enhance job oppor-
15 tunities in related fields of industry, and have a highly bene-
16 ficial impact on Orange County; and
17 WHEREAS, all of the vast growth potential of the South -
18 land, and specifically Orange County, depends upon the constant,
19 critical need for secure water supplies; and
20` WHEREAS, the bonds will provide for our basic water
21 needs until at least 1990; and
22 WHEREAS, the alternative to passage of the bond measure- -
23 a substantial increase in the tax rate - - possibly double the
24 present rate - - would be catastrophic to the overburdened taxpayer
25 NOVI, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
26 the City of Newport Beach that it supports the proposed Metropolitai
27 Water District bond issue and hereby urges every citizen of Orange
28 County to vote YES on this urgent measure.
