RESOLUTION NO. 6884
• A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
• NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING THAT THE CALIFORNIA
HIGHWAY COMMISSION REOPEN THE HEARING ON THE
ADOPTION OF THE ROUTE 55 (NEWPORT) FREEWAY FROM
BAY STREET TO THE ROUTE 1.FREEWAY9 AND FURTHER
REQUESTING THAT THE COMMISSION ADOPT A NEW
ALIGNMENT OF SAID PORTION OF THE ROUTE 55
(NEWPORT) FREEWAY ALONG SUPERIOR AVENUE
WHEREAS9 the presently adopted route of the Route 55
(Newport) Freeway between Bay Street and the adopted Route 1
Freeway is along Newport Boulevard-, and
WHEREAS, on May 179 19679 the California Highway Com-
mission directed its engineering staff to prepare a study on the
possible realignment of the southerly terminus of the Newport
Freeway in response to a request by the City of Newport Beach that
a location along Superior Avenue be considered for the Newport
Freeway; and
WHEREAS, the said study of alternate routes for the
southerly terminus of the Newport Freeway has been completed and
will be considered by the California Highway Commission at its
meeting of November 15, 19689 and
WHEREAS, this City Council has given careful study to
the possible alternate alignments of the southerly terminus of the
Newport Freeway and is convinced that an alignment along Superior
Avenue would benefit both Newport Beach and the City of Costa Mesa
by preserving Newport Boulevard as a major arterial highway;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach that;
1, The California.Highway Commission is requested to
reopen the hearing on the matter of the alignment of the southerly
terminus of the Newport Freeway between Bay Avenue and the adopted
Route 1 Freeway, and is further requested to adopt a new alignment
for said portion of the Newport Freeway along Superior Avenue in
' a
place of the presently adopted route along Newport Boulevard.
• 2. It is the position of the City Council that if the
Superior Avenue alignment is adopted, it does not object to the
-• type of connection described as "4-D" in the report of the State
Highway District Engineer dated May 109 1968.
ADOPTED this 7th day of October, 1968.
