Dear Council Members:
Due to an accident I am unable to attend today's meeting. I have been a
member of the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation board for the last
several years and know how diligently this group has been working to make
the Theater a reality. I believe there is a great need for expanded performing
arts educational opportunities in light of shrinking public school funding for
these types of educational programs. The proposed collaboration between
the Balboa Theater and City of Newport Beach to offer these types of
programs in local schools and city facilities is a wonderful idea. I urge the
Council to support the project.

Dear Council members:
I'm sorry I can't attend this meeting. I'm Tod White. I grew up in Newport
Beach and live on the peninsula about 5 blocks from the Balboa Theater.
My wife, Linda, and I love theater, especially local theater. I'm currently a
member of the Board of Trustees of South Coast Repertory Theatre. We're
also season ticket holders at the Chance Theater in Anaheim.
We know first hand the many benefits local, live theater can produce for
residents, businesses and the community at large.
We have been, and continue to be, very supportive of efforts to bring the
Balboa Theater back to life. The City also has been and, I hope, will
continue to be, strong supporters. I think we all agree that a rejuvenated
Balboa Theater can be a great asset for education, entertainment and
economic stimulus on the peninsula and beyond.
Thank you.

Regarding: City Support of Balboa Performing Arts Theater
My wife and I are aware that the City is considering loaning the Balboa
Performing Arts Theater Foundation three million dollars to help finance the
construction of the facility, provided the theater board meets a number of
requirements. As individuals who are supporters of and have been involved with
the Balboa Performing Arts Theater Foundation, we believe the City's investment
in the theater will be beneficial to all of Newport Beach.
We understand that the theater will be staging a variety of performances and will
be conducting, in conjunction with the city's Recreation Department, arts
education for the youth of our community, modeled on a successful program that
has been taking place in Rancho Palos Verdes. As educators, we both believe
that bolstering the arts and cultural activities available in our city has a wide
variety of benefits.
We applaud the Council's decision to commit more resources to the cultural and
artistic life of the city. We believe supporting the Balboa Performing Arts Theater
fits well into this endeavor.
Sincerely,
Robert B. Smith, Ph. D.
