A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH URGING THE LEAGUE OF CALI-
FORNIA CITIES AND THE COUNTY SUPERVISORS'
ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA TO SUPPORT AN IN-
CREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF FUNDS NOW BEING SET
ASIDE FOR UNDERGROUNDING OF EXISTING UTILITY
LINES
WHEREAS, there is a recognized need for undergrounding
existing overhead utility lines throughout the State of California;
and
WHEREAS, the amount of funds currently being set aside
for underground conversion as a result of California Public Utili-
ties Case No. 8209 are not sufficient to accomplish the work in
a reasonable length of time; and
WHEREAS, in the City of Newport Beach alone it is esti-
mated that at the present level of funding it would.require ap-
proximately 100 years to convert the overhead facilities on the
arterial streets:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach urges both the League of California
Cities and the County Supervisors' Association of California to
support a change to the California Public Utilities Commission
rules that would significantly increase the amount of funds now
being set aside by power companies for undergrounding of utilities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby
directed to send copies of this resolution to the League of Cali-
fornia Cities, the County Supervisors' Association of California
and all of the cities in Orange County.
